[Poll] Game Instructions

Got a great new idea for the game?

Should there be some form of game-mode instructions?

Yes, between the Loading screen and the Team Select screen.

I think as somebody who has been in the game for a while, you are underestimating how confusing the game can be to a new player. Just because the game mode is CTF or TOW does not mean it is simple to understand when you first load up the game. There are a large number of questions usually asked which could easily be put into an instructions page.

- Where is the intel?
- What do the icons mean?
- How do I capture tents?
- When does the capture bar move?
- Why is this tent not capturing?
- Where do I take the intel?

Those are just a few examples of questions I've seen asked which could easily be put into a page, possible in the loading screen or after it which could be simply clicked past by those who know it. As I've said, it wouldn't effect older players whatsoever, but would give some explanation to newer players.

As I have also said before, it is very unlikely that any new player will go out of their way to read instructions, so putting them in the readme or elsewhere on the website is not an effective way of teaching.

If you don't think they will read then why bother?

Everything in the game works exactly as anyone would expect and is standard.
Where is the intel? It is the cross, as always
What do the icons mean? Red cross gives health, circles are people, cross is an objective, as always
How do I capture tents? Walk up to it, as usual
When does the capture bar move? When you are capping/loosing, as usual
Why is this tent not capturing? Because you can't cap it, as one would think
Where do I take the intel? Back to my base, there is only 1 marker for friendly base so no contest

I dunno, I never had a problem or even had to think for a second for any of these when I first joined. Maybe because I had played a game before.

There is no way that we can build an entire tutorial in to the game, so having people read the wiki/forums like a normal person would is the best thing to do. I know i had read the entire wiki and the forums by the first week of playing, but that is mainly because I don't like to derp around and complain that a game is hard instead of doing something to figure it out.

EDIT: Kind of ironic that this era is the easiest to search and learn new info, yet people are apparently the least likely to...

Again, you neglect to read the entire thread...

This would be editable within each server, so that even custom made game modes would have their own description by the script maker.

People won't go out of their way to read instructions, but they may be more inclined to do so when they are put before them in the game. That is why putting them elsewhere will not get them read by a new player. There was no point in you answering those questions, they were just examples of what has been asked in-game and could be answered in a small screen in-game.

Drunk: You also seem to not want to read the rest of the thread. It has been explained that the text in-game is hard to read and disappears very quickly. It is also limited to how much information can be shown.

Oh, so it is the same as what already exists?

Seems like what you really want is to be able to read chat (press t/y and it shows the chat history or something) rather than an entirely new system that does the same thing as the existing system.

That would be a good start, but would still not be the best option in my opinion.

Firstly, creating an entirely new chat system is probably more work than simply making a screen between loading and team selection (or on the loading screen) with pure text, maybe a few images.

Secondly, having it separate from the game means it can be read quickly and in one go without disturbing the game.

An overhaul of the text system is something I do think the game needs, but is a much bigger job than simply making a single screen, and is something for another thread.

It's not as big a job as you think. Most people I know who use custom clients do this. Really it is just a case of writing the messages to a log file (or a cache) and displaying them when you hit the button. Hell, the messages are already cached for a short time so to do this legitly is even easier!

It isn't the displaying of previous messages which need changing. It's the ability to see them clearly (against the variously coloured environments we play in) as well condensing them into the chat client, while still being able to view previous messages. But this is getting a little off-topic.

Why not allow servers to have coloured text, then they could make their special server messages bright green or red or pink.

The benefit is that this could be used for other things rather than just describing the game mode. Generic solutions are better.

It would still run into the issue of being difficult to read on different backgrounds.

Servers can choose which colour(s) to use. So that isn't a problem.

I vote for a pale black outline around the text.

But I think the biggest obstacle that prevents players from undertanding the gamemode is the language.
We all know that not most of the people who play AoS could read English easily.
To a Physicist, white and black is the presence and absence of color.
To a Fine Artist, white and black are just shades and tints of color.
To a Painter, any paint that you could get into a can is a color.
THIS color, on the other hand, is #b4d455.

You're missing the point. Because the various coloured backgrounds, any colour will at some point be difficult to read.

Servers can choose the colour...

If their map is red, they can choose green text, if the map is green they can choose red text. ETC

What map has most of its surfaces eye-burning pink?

Maps may start one colour and end another, or switch to another which has a different colour.
