Hello, I have an idea (taken from Battlefield 2) that could strongly improve teamplay's efficiency : the ability to become the commander, who gives orders via the map

Any player can ask for being the commander, if several players want to be the commander, teammates vote. One commander per team, of course

Once the commander is elected, he has new commands when displaying the map (with M). Available commands are orders, such as attack or defend. The commander just has to pick the order he wants to give, and click on the map where he wants to attack/defend.

Orders appear as icons on his teammates' radar and map. I think that a sword icon for an attack order, a sniper icon for an infiltration order and a shield icon for a defense order can be easily understood by all his squad. He could also mark approximative location of spotted enemies ("seen" on the map with shooting marks) to warn his team of enemies presence in the area.

To increase tactical potential, as asking a full team to attack or defend the same place is rarely a good choice, the commander could also choose who gets the order, selecting the concerned teammates, in extra of the order and the location.

Of course, the commander can fight like any other player, he just has to close the map for that.

If the commander makes stupid choices, teammates also have the possibility to kick the commander, making him a simple soldier and letting another player be his team's commander.

+ High increase of teamplay

- A "griefer commander" could do anything stupid to ruin this feature. Even with a good commander, good squadmates are also required

This is pretty much what I was talking about here. I would like everything in your post. Also, commanders should be able to reward players for following orders. These rewards would be points that would show up on the player's game account. This would provide more incentive for players to work together.

Edit: Also, server owners should be able to have a list of 'trusted' commanders who would automatically receive commander status opon joining.

Yeah, I had a similar idea in the Mixed Game mode thread. Except it was only done randomly by a simple AI. I think this would be nice too.

i hope you dont mean that they could ad xp to a bank of xp that youearn to unlock weapns and there are other means of getting xp cuz i hate that cod format (even if it is partially implemented in other games). But if this is the only way of getting the points and it is just for show, Awesome! But dont you also think that the commander himself should recieve half the poins or so that he delivers so that he would get rewarded for being a good commander?

A trusted list of commanders won't be fair, because whoever was commander will be a soldier again, so you have to earn it always.

Easy fix: If a trusted player joins while another commander is in place, that trusted player remains a normal soldier until the current commander is kicked/disconnects. When the commander spot is open, the trusted player will automatically be set as commander.

I believe that having a trusted commander list is important, It would help prevent deuces from abusing the commander system.

Maybe simply giving a vote bonus if a trusted player asks for being the commander, like a 50% vote bonus (if a trusted player gets 2 votes, it counts as 3 votes). Trusted players may not want to be commander every time.

I think Nuclear Dawn did this pretty well as for Commanders.

You can opt in to be commander, but it is randomly selected if there are multiple. If you all hate the commander, you can just vote for a kick.

As for what they can do, it seems like it would be great if they could send in things like Supply Crates to refill health and ammo, Call in a strike of sorts (Grenades falling in an area), create "buildings" (It would take the terrain into view, and construct something from there), etc.

The commander from BF2 is also the same, with the ability to deploy radars.

But I don't think that putting these abilities in AOS would be good. Players would want to be commander just to use airstrikes or to resupply themselves instead of really being commander. To keeps commanders efficient, I think they shouldn't have more than the ability to give orders

I'm not sure if it's the same, but Sham's servers have a commander-type script. The only difference is that anybody can trigger them. For example, you can type !tunnel into team chat to create a large arrow on the map pointing to the entrance to the tunnel.

Almost, the main differences is that the commander must be elected (or is simply auto-proclammed if only one player wants to be the commander) and gives orders via the map instead of commands.
