Automatically shrink guns that exceed a size limit

Got a great new idea for the game?

Should the scale be adjusted instead of limiting the number of voxels in a gun?

Automatically shrink guns that exceed a size limit

Postby Paratrooper » Fri Apr 27, 2012 3:25 am

Instead of limiting the size of the gun itself (imposing a maximum number of voxels), maybe the game could just automatically adjust the size?

With this, mod makers could make very big high-detail mods, but then they would just be scaled down to the size of the default rifle.

Thish should disable those "laser mods", and at the same time give way to very highly-detailed mods.

Thoughts?

To a Physicist, white and black is the presence and absence of color.
To a Fine Artist, white and black are just shades and tints of color.
To a Painter, any paint that you could get into a can is a color.
THIS color, on the other hand, is #b4d455.

True, I hate all those mods that allow people to see others through walls and what not by misusing this.

I also think this would be pretty epic, you have my vote :D

Then long-sniper rifles are ruined. But still agree!(PTRS-41 is a notable example)

The problem is that models would all have the same ingame size, from pistols to massive anti-tank rifles. You'd need a system to choose the ingame lenght of the weapon, up to 2-3 meters.

How about this, make it so weapons must fit within a certain voxel limit? (say, no more then 50 long, 20 high and 35 wide) and anything exceeding those limits (and you would have to work hard to do so) wouldn't let you play, the same way you cant increase the sizes of of heads or body parts.

Orrrrrrr... Simply make it so every player had their own weapon mod, so if somebody wanted to make a laser sight weapon, well it would only be detrimental to themselves!

I personly tried making lasers for weapons and I quickly came back to normal weapons, as the laser made aiming difficult. I don't consider it as a problem

Laser sights should have long been removed. There should be a size limit rather than scaling, but for the principle of stopping the lasers, yes.

I dunno if the OpenGL will do this, but an engine that doesn't allow models to be seen through blocks. For the most part, fix'd.

Actually this has great potential. you could make HD skins if this were implemented. transforming this from a low detailed game to a high detailed shooter.

and this would be good not only for guns but for all the kv6 files.

i support this %100

the only thing that would make this better is having different player models for each team.

Not saying that your opinion or input and ideas are invalid, but i think the reason most people are here because they enjoy the charm of the blocky shooter, and possibly that the low requirements given by the low-res allows them to play.

I do however agree with your point on diff. player models for each team, and believe that they should be able to be modded outwards and inwards (Within reason, otherwise we'll get red signs on people's heads).

How would the engine decide the proper way to scale a model? There are many variables to consider, I doubt it would be too simple.

I think that there should be a voxel limit, and if a skin is bigger than that limit, it is automaticly scaled. This way pistols wont be the same size as a AK-47 and a bazooka.

Mods are clientside anyway, so "lets limit gun size to prevent cheats" doesn't work. Personally I prefer to use x-ray, map hacks, and OPK so I have no need for this shrinking, but I could just as easily load in a model and prevent it from scaling, if I really wanted this laser sight thing.

I prefer weapons as they are, but of course some people think it is great to have highres objects in a lowres game (just look at those people who use hi-res textures in minecraft...). I don't see any harm in it, just don't think that it will even remotely stop cheating.

At least it would stop the use of laser mods. That would eliminate one of the most easily available method of cheating.
