I have read a few threads about vehicles and ladders/ doors, and I think that ladders and doors will become very useful, and maybe also vehicles, but this may be a bit complicated. I think that there could be some way of using your blocks to buy stuff like ladders or doors, or even grenades and medkits, maybe start off with 50 blocks, but make it so that you can collect larger numbers of blocks for larger items that may be in the game later on like vehicles or mines etc.

1.Spawn.
2.Buy some stuff.
3.Place the stuff.
4.Die.
5.Respawn again.
6.???
7.Repeat for infinite profitz !!!
As you see it would be too easy to abuse, unless you make it so mthat only when you join the server you get those 50 blocks and the rest of the resources are up to you, but that would really limit the amount of constructions making this even more of a run 'n gun game.

Perhaps this could give gathering some purpose... 50 blocks when you join the server then when you respawn you are forced to go dig into a mountain, this could encourage tunneling as well.

This encourages griefing as well.

Well if griefers have something to do like go to the enemy base, break a few things and come back to base with blocks so we can stock up on ammo and supplies it may be a bit different. This can also encourage discarding old buildings for some more blocks, teamwork would be enforced as well because the team wouldn't want to lose those 100 blocks that someone is carrying to build a decent base.

One solution could be to have special spendable blocks hidden underground. digging one with the shovel's primary function would add a number of build points to your inventory, which can be used to build special blocks and/or structural elements. This opens up a lot of other possibilities for game mechanics. Perhaps you gain a small number of build points for each kill, or for destroying blocks placed by the opposing team with the shovel.

What about flat maps?

perhaps the map would get a idk 20 block deep "mining" layer below the actual map

I know for a fact that maps aren't flat water maps so water would stay the same
