Crouching motion or toggle

Got a great new idea for the game?

Crouching motion or toggle

Postby BrosephRadson » Fri Jan 13, 2012 9:25 pm

Not sure if this was suggested on the old forums, but here goes...

It seems some people abuse crouching to make it extremely difficult to shoot them. By hiding behind a 2 block wall and spamming ctrl, you become nearly impossible to hit.

Now, most people are courteous and don’t abuse this, but theres always that one guy...

This is why im suggesting a sort of simple motion for crouching that is quick enough to not affect gameplay negatively, while still preventing people from crouch spamming.

Or as an alternative, make crouching a toggle?

No, you should be popping up from cover only to look and to take shots. If someone is ducking behind a 2 block wall at light speed then shoot the wall. Besides that you can always just time it and headshot them.

Shooting out 1 block takes 3 shots. If youre using the semi, youre dead before the block is gone.

Timing it isnt possible unless you get lucky because theyre only visible for an instant.

Overall, trying to kill someone either by demolishing their cover or timing shots is a deathwish and a waste of ammo.

The reason id like to see this changed is because its a cheap way of gaining an advantage without needing skill, and its abusing the crouch for unintended purposes.

The purpose of crouch is to duck behind walls to evade bullets. This is exactly the intended purpose - and even if it wasn't then that is no reason to remove it.

Timing is possible, I have no trouble killing people who duck up and down. Improve your reflexes if you have trouble. And remember, he has the same amount of time to kill you as you have to kill him. If you go for block destruction then you have the advantage, the block doesn't move but you do (you do move and duck don't you?).

Alternately use team work and have a semi destroy the block in .3 of a second.

Using cover should be required and encourged, not seen as a 'cheap skillless tactic'.

I do this but its fair. When others repeat the tactic, I can easily take them down. You should be able to time it.

Rapidly crouching to avoid fire is abusing the games mechanics. Im not saying anything needs to be removed, i just think it should take a realistic amount of time to crouch. You can still use it to get behind cover, but you cant rapidly tap ctrl to avoid fire.

And i understand that you can time it if theyre slow about it, but someone whos quick enough is near impossible to hit because of lag.

Lag makes them easier to hit, not harder. If you hit a player due to lag then the hit still counts. No matter how fast they tap they are hittable, infact it is DEFINITELY easier to hit someone who is popping up and down than it is to hit someone who is crouched the whole time.

"realistic" <- no

You either are not understanding me very well or your client behaves differently than mine. On my end, it is in no way easier to hit someone who is lagging.

It is hard to hit someone who is crouched behind a wall, and thats fine, as it isnt abusing anything.

This isn't abusing the games mechanic, it's playing well.

Being a puss instead of using actual skill is "playing well?"

Yes. Not allowing your opponent to hit you is a pretty good tactic.

There are plenty of ways to avoid getting shot that dont require abuse of the games mechanics, such as using effective cover and outmaneuvering the opposing team. Using skill to kill the enemy first helps a lot too.

Perhaps you are confused as to how the client works? Latency between the server and client will more than likely make the packets arrive at an unsteady rate.

Your claim is this (I have paraphrased the packets to either "crouch" or "uncrouch", however please understand that there is no such thing as either of these packets, they are actually varieties of the input data packet)
Crouch *lag* Uncrouch *no lag* crouch

In actual fact the situation is
Crouch *an amount of lag* uncrouch *an amount of lag* crouch
Thus in reality you will have a varying amount of time, simply line up the shot and take it when lag is in your favour - if it is such a huge problem for you.

It is no abuse of game mechanics to duck to avoid bullets, as said this is the intended purpose. What part of the mechanics specificity do you think is abusive?

Please be advised that using cover is generally considered part of gameplay, and that a lot of people will simply look at this thread and think "what? complaining that people duck? what a deuce". I think we have already seen one of these replies already.

Its not the crouching that bothers me, as ive repeatedly stated. Its when people rapidly crouch fast enough that theyre nearly impossible to hit. Theres no consistent way of hitting someone whos doing it. Its hit and miss, so its a waste of ammo. Its a pussy way of avoiding shots instead of learning effective map control and aiming skill.

If someone is bopping up and down as fast as you say, then don't you think it would be just as hard for them to hit you? If not harder since you will be moving around and ducking too.

If you choose not to flank them, move in to cover, time a shot and kill them, destroy their cover, or just outright charge them, and instead decided to suggest that crouching be slower, don't you think that could possibly be your own personal issue rather than the game?

I think you have somehow been convinced that crouching fast is not a legitimate tactic. I am not sure why or how, but I don't think you are correct.
