Suggestion: Individual Player skins

Got a great new idea for the game?

on paper, great idea. Maybe just let the player have a small logo that shows up on their helmet/on the back of their torso.
Unfortunately, from a technical perspective, I'm pretty sure this WOULDN'T work.
I imagine you got the idea for this from Minecraft multiplayer, where every player can easily have their own skin.
Sadly, however, there is a large difference to how graphics are handled in Minecraft and AoS. In Minecraft, every player is just the same body shape with their own custom texture layed over the geometry.
Ace of Spades, however, doesn't use textures, which I believe is why it runs so well on such old computers. Just have a look at the banner at the top of the forum. You see how the two soldiers are actually made of hundreds of tiny blocks? That's how the actual game works, too. Your soldier's face isn't a face texture on a cube, it's actually a 3-D grid of cubes that make a face. And as much as it pains me to say it, this 3-D cube isn't going to work well with custom skins.

While you are correct, minecraft and Ace of Spades handle graphics differently, you failed to explain why this affects custom skins.

How about, instead of a whole skin for yourself, only your head is publicly displayed. No vulgar stuff (hopefully), and you can still be creative

Complete crap.
in fact:
The resolution of a AoS player model is quite small compared to the resolution of a Minecraft skin and people have no problems using MC and skins.

This is a pretty cool idea. I like the idea of being recognized by the other team, and having my own unique skin. If this encompassed weapon models as well, that would eliminate the issue of kv6 exploitation. The farther we stretch this, however, the less customizable the game may be. Say if I got a new gun model or player skin, it would only affect my avatar. We might have to bear crappily made weapons or penis "art" on others. Are we willing to sacrifice our greater control over these things?

Yes because every game with customization is a minecraft clone gotcha.'

This means: Team Fortress + B-F (the only two I can think of right now) = Minecraft

Halo 3 and Halo reach allow customization of player appearance. Just saying.

If we did do customization for individuals, I think the head is the safest way to go and the simplest model to work with. Even if someone made their head invisible, snipers would still have a good idea of where to aim with a headless body running around.

ok, get past the whole penis thing. just votekick the idiot in the penis costume.

think about it, apart from than it would be pretty cool, worst case, votekick the freak with the penis on his head.

and i would hardly affect specs seeing that almost all player skins are under 10kb. at most it would take up 0.25 mb per person.

a 64 player server with everyone using skins would be 16 mb with the amount of skins i described.

if your computer wouldn't handle that. then your computer is really bad and you should get a new one.

the main thing that would make this difficult is coding it in. something im pretty sure ben doesn't want to do.

The blocks of the head just could be coloured how the players want to have them. No custom models or textures.
