Portable Radar

Got a great new idea for the game?

Portable Radar

Postby beefprophet » Fri Jun 29, 2012 10:02 pm

Hello, and sorry if this has already been posted.

You all know the campers - the ones who sit in the corners, high up in the air, or simply in a forgettable spot that no one can notice. With a rifle and a steady aim, these motherhubbers can take down waves of poor innocent deuces not through smart conservation of cover, but simply by being damn hard to find.

To fix this, I have a propostion;

rather than starting out with grenades, a Deuce starts out with a radar system of some sort. When he wants to find an enemy, he simply switches to the system, turns it on - and now the deuce can see ALL deuces in the immediate area.

But of course, it would be cheap to just run around blasting everyone who is unfortunate enough to stay in one spot for too long - that's why the system has a limited amount of energy. For every second the radar is on, the energy bar for the radar slowly ticks down until it runs out of energy. At that time, the Deuce's only hope is to run back to base and recharge before he becomes camper fodder.

Now obviously this would be a late addition - as the game as it is now is complicated enough already - but with the addition of the rocket and the machinegun, it could be cool to find a way to spot hidden machinegunners before they murder a deuce squad and it could add an extra layer to the game by forcing people to be on the lookout for those deuces and their pesky radar scanners...

It might be cool, or even just to add some sort of map spotting feature where you need to manually spot them for assists would be great team work, and very simple, nothing too complicated. I think it is a good idea, but maybe should instead just be spotting or something, since that requires a bit more effort than just throwing a motion detector on the floor

So, that camper found a great sniping spot, knows what he is doing, knows how to use proper cover, and knows how to camouflage his bunker. Explain to me again why the heck should he be penalized for his inteligence?

Because lowering the skill ceiling is the goal of every game designer :P

Seriously though, the idea of radar is that you don't have gophers hiding in walls and shooting deuces as they come by - it's cool the first time around, but after you're blasted by the same guy in his stupid labryinth of doom it's kind of annoying that you can't flush the thing out.

Once again, it's probably not needed right now but it could be a cool idea if implemented later on, when weapons are more balanced and ammo and health crates allow you to stay for longer in the field. And also when there's mgs added to the list of weapons that shoot you from a cubby hole.

If you get killed by the same guy all the time without even thinking about:
->Tunneling
->Grenades
->Or even simply take another route, goddamn
, then you deserved it.

I don't see why we should have a skill ceiling. Sure, it may be frustrating, but heck, if you are getting killed over and over and over always the same way, it means it is time for you to give up. It is like that horrible Lag Compensation that CoD has: It penalizes people that spend more money for a better internet.

Ok, first of all I was joking about the skill ceiling thing.

Secondly, I am aware that noob stupidity is the major cause of such things, and that grenades are useful for clearing guys out.

Sorry if I sounded like I was hating on people who use skill to hide (in fact I am one of those people), I was simply using hyperbole to illustrate the kind of problem that the radar would fix aka peeps who are well hidden.

In any case, it's an idea to make the game a little more complicated and although (as I have said already) it probably isn't good or useful to put in right now, the addition of new items such as machineguns and rockets might make it a little more useful.

Radar, for now, in my opinion, is a big NO.

I will have to agree with ChaosTLW. Camping takes skill, and if you are killed over and over again, from the same guy that is camping at the same place, it is your fault you are dieing.

Anyway here are the disadvantages campers have already :

1) it is hard to find a good camping place, and camouflaging it well.
2) if you just sit around anywhere you want, you won't get many kills.
3) when people see you once, you have to switch locations.
4) destructable cubes. (people will easily blow through your cover with smg, and nades)
5) bullet tracing on the map. (this is their biggest problem) - just by looking at the map, they can easily see the exact location you are at, and kill you in every possible way.

Now imagine a radar on all of that. It is an overkill :D .. You might ask, "well, who makes them camp anyway?" "Some people are just born to play like that, and enjoy the game."

p.s. If this game keeps adding radars, kill-streaks and stuff, it will become just like call of duty, and that in my opinion, will kill every bits of originality of this game. [DontDoIt] D:

First off, our game is not set in a more recent time. This isn't something based off the Gulf war or anything, but rather Vietnam or one of the World Wars. Try to remember we dont want to add such that ruins the games setting.

Secondly, we dont even have radar now. I dont think this is gonna help bring it back. It'd be really hard to get back something that was already removed from the game.

Also, like I said, this game isn't made to re-inact recent wars and warfare, so using CoD MW3 as your source for this kinda stuff wont work. Im sorry, but there is not a way its going to be made the way you have it in mind

My idea is it to work like this:

#1. Within 5, 7 blocks you can detect enemy movement

- Within every 5 seconds a red dot would flash showing their recent position
- Once the enemy walked away from your detection zone they can no longer be detected on the map
- The breakage of blocks would cause the radar to react faster and give an even more recent detection

#2. The new helicopter would hover over a position

- Whenever the helicopter hovered over an enemy within a 10 block radius the enemy would become totally seeable through the map
- You could see every player's movement and direction

Now, because we're not sure how the helicopter will totally work, I decided not to put this as a format. So, instead of having your teammates hover over an area, you could force one somewhere. Image little timmy capturing the intel. Onstead of using the helicopter he could have it automatically go over a position and be used as a radar detector.
