Modem? Portforwarding? Help!

Well someone said you can't host/port forward with a modem and another person said you did not have to Port forward to host on a modem. I need the correct answer and If you can could you please tell me how?

Never host with a modem.
Modem = really bad server lag
You will either have it hosted
Get a new ISP
Run a laggy server.
In conclusion don't host from a modem
