There has been discussion in other threads about breaking cover, especially in water where you cannot build.
I would love to see people have the ability to pop out some smoke for cover when they are moving.

It's not something that everyone will want, or even understand how to use effectively, but once people realize how effective it can be, I have a feeling it will become very well used in time.

I already suggested ammo boxes and health packs in another thread.. the goal for these additions is not to overpower a specific class or player, but to encourage team/squad play. If only one weapon class got smoke, say rifleman, you could give the shotgun an ammopack and the smg the medkit.. that way, a 3-man squad would be able to support eachother and provide cover while moving from position to position..

I love aos as it is right now, but I really think that more teamplay encouragement would make it a much deeper and more tactical game.

I certainly support smoke grendes, they'd definitely be useful for crossing open terrain or when entering a CQC environment,or perhaps as distraction. The biggest problem would be implementing them into the engine, though.

As for medkits/ammo packs, I like the concept, but putting them on a combat class might make them too powerful. Maybe give them to a seperate support class with no primary (or a very weak one)?

Weapon != class

One of the biggest components of the game is using cover, anything that discourages or excuses people from using it should not be added in my opinion.

I am not saying it would not be effective, I am saying it isn't needed and isn't good. For example if you gave everyone homing bullets then that would be highly effective, but that means you wouldn't have to aim anymore, and thus would not be a good suggestion, at all.

Some how this needs to be balanced. Like only 2 smoke grenades per 50 blocks

Sounds like a good idea. But lets think on two things:
1. Voxel smoke. It is not muzzle smoke and not block breaking particles. It must be a big massive of particles, so that could take some RAM.
2. Details problem. More detailed smoke means lags, and non-detailed cannot be useful. It will be hard to make a choice.

Not in my mind. It should work like this:

1. Grenade is thrown.
2. It explodes.
3. Game creates an area around it.
4. Game covers the surface of that area with black fog.
5. Anyone in it will have their vision limited.

That way you only need to render the particles of the surface of the area. When you're in it, the server won't send you the world outside the area, thus making it less laggy.

Sorry if confusing, but if you didn't understand feel free to ask a more detailed explanation.

if this gets implemented, dont make it like most minecraft modders who decide that it would be a good idea to spawn hundreds and hundreds of particles to block you view. make it an image.
