A file that can be edited to change a weapon's stats

Postby Paratrooper » Mon Apr 02, 2012 11:28 pm

tl;dr --> Don't
We all know that one of the core features of AoS that other games lack is the ease of modding the game.
Why not let users take it up a notch by enabling them to modify the gun itself?

I suggest a weaponconfig file that could be edited with ease in notepad.
My suggested format

This would increase the freedom given to the users. You could increase the fire rate, but this would also increase recoil. You could increase damage but this would then decrease accuracy. Increasing the capacity of the weapon increases the reload time. Decreasing the capacity, on the other hand, decreases the reload time.
There are maximum values to prevent potential abuse (one-hit kill shotgun, wat?). For now, the default values will be minimum.

This should also decrease the number of people suggesting new weapons, since users can now taylor the three guns to suit their needs.

All the modifications you made to the gun will be client side, which means that the configuration will only take effect on your guns.

Feel free to ask any questions.

To a Physicist, white and black is the presence and absence of color.
To a Fine Artist, white and black are just shades and tints of color.
To a Painter, any paint that you could get into a can is a color.
THIS color, on the other hand, is #b4d455.

Not sure if I read that readme correctly, but I think that there should be a balance between the stats. (Correct me if you already said this.)

For example, if you want to increase damage, a side affect would increase the recoil. If you were to lower the damage, the recoil would go down as well.

It would also be cool if players could be customized like this. Maybe you could make your guy really fat so he has 250 HP, but he moves really slow. Or, you could make your guy have 1 HP, but can sprint across the map in a few seconds.

I personally think it would be way too easy to abuse.

Set low damage to get low recoil, and the low damage doesnt matter when you can hit 10 bullets before going off target.

But it would also take longer to kill the enemy. It's not like the current SMG has no recoil at all when crouching.

Doesnt matter if the other guy only hits 2 or 3 bullets because of the recoil.

Point is: there would always be some sort of balancing when editing the files.

So what if you could hit him two or three times? You only made a dent on his health. And probably your fire rate is too slow that the enemy could still respond.

Sure, you could increase the fire rate, but then this will decrease the accuracy (and reliability) of the weapon. Sure you can increase the damage, but you'll have to re-aim every singe shot since recoil keeps messing up your aim.

Agreed. Let's not get into the exact numbers here, Paratrooper just suggested an overall idea that would make this game much more interesting.

I assume you mean this would be client-side? I don't think that would be very ideal as everybody would just modify the controls to attempt to gain an advantage over other players.

Make recoil low as possible > reduced dmg > doesn't matter, just double tap them in the head.

/n, this would be far to easy.

Assuming we're using the current format:

Lowest damage = current SMG damage.

Crap. Forgot to mention that this is client-side.

I'd like this if there was a sense of give-and-take, like to add more damage you have to add more fire delay as well.

Then,

Highest RoF possible > lower dmg > Doesn't matter, i can negate all recoil on SMG just by dragging mouse down slowly. I could do the same with this.
