[Slight] weapon sway

Postby ZaPhobos » Sat Jun 23, 2012 6:10 am

In response to a part of a tweet by bcoolface (one of our resident developers), I have made this thread to discuss a minor tweak to the game engine that could be implemented:
Weapon sway

The idea is simple for me, bring back the old "Damn straight I'll kill this guy*" rifle accuracy, while adding a small amount of movement while aiming down the sights. Weapon sway should apply to all firearms.

This could improve realism by a margin, if added.
My idea of this is the person aims down the sights, and the weapon moves slightly left and right, randomly by only a few pixels. By few, the max should be around 3 for any weapon.

Determining factors for amount of sway could be:
Are you moving or not? This causes more sway to occur, especially when standing.

Are you crouching or not? Almost fully negates sway when only crouching, and quartered when crouching and moving.

Are you in the "red zone?" This increases sway if your health is down to the red zone. Will push players to head to their control point more often.

I hope you like the idea, and discuss it.

...but then again I created a topic listed in the do not suggest area... I wonder why not...

*At times, when the targeting reticule is directly on a targets head or other body part, the shot will not register, or it "misses" due to the rifle spread.

Since there wasn't a topic referenced about weapon sway in the DNSL, this would be the new thread about it. No worries ^^.
To a Physicist, white and black is the presence and absence of color.
To a Fine Artist, white and black are just shades and tints of color.
To a Painter, any paint that you could get into a can is a color.
THIS color, on the other hand, is #b4d455.

Moderately agree, but I would want to test this out first. Sounds like it could make jump shots practically impossible.

This is meant to make the game slightly more realistic and challenge players while removing rifle spread.
People don't do practical jump shots in real life.

Weapon sway applys to all weapons but spade and grenade for obvious reasons.

So what? It's a game and it's not about reality. Bad idea. MW2-ish.

Actually, I think different. As jump shots usually are measured in fractions of seconds, weapon sway wouldn't interfere that much.

So what? MW2 didn't invented this. Just because it is in MW2 we shouldn't have it, is that so? Well shit son, then we should remove sprinting, walking, ironsighs, and the guns themselves, because all that shit is ALSO in MW2.

+1
I loved the .70 rifle accuracy, if we re-implement that and give sway to the game i reckon it would be a very subtle and popular idea :D

I have always mentioned this here and there, but sadly I dont think it has been considered.

Here was my idea:

*Weapons would sway while walking/moving
*pancakes would be reduced/gone by crouching
*Running then walking would cause sway to be "uncontrollable" for 3 seconds
*Recoil would also be increased, causing for more strategy and being "patient" for walking into a gun fight

Thats just how I saw pancakes as.

Simplicity is key to the development, take it one step at a time.

My idea has sway while only aiming down the sights, a simple "aiming down sights y/n?" System would sit here, and it would sway very slowly while simply standing.

Lose it being gone by crouching, but keep it as almost fully negated when only crouching, and quartered when crouching and moving.

Keep the normal recoil, it makes you have to recenter pretty hard when using any gun as is, especially the rifle.

"Uncontrollable sway" Should not occur as stated, three (3) seconds is a long time in hindsight anyway.

I agree, sway could be reduced when you are mounted on a block(if that is a possible thing to add) or when you are crouched. I would like it a lot, it would be cool

Define this? We don't need a ton of different things to go in simply to adjust stability and accuracy.
