Grenade Ticks

Postby KevinLancaster » Mon Feb 27, 2012 10:42 pm

It would allow us to make better judgement on when to throw the grenade for maximum effect.
I asked bcoolface if it were possible, he said yes, but putting it in would depend on community opinion.
Do you guys think it would be a good idea if it were implemented as an option? Would it be too noob-friendly? Discuss.

EDIT: I realized that I could add ticks to the grenade pin sound as an example, so if you guys want to try it out extract the pin.wav to your Ace of Spades/wav folder. Backup your old one if you want to use it again.

This just to demonstrate what it would be like. It doesn't work 100% because AoS stops playing sounds halfway sometimes when there is a lot going on.

Supported, I think it will not only give you better judgement as the grenade thrower but keep enemies on the lookout, which makes it more interesting.

Ah, yah sure. It doesn't seem to big of a core game changer, just a nice easy to add polish. I fully support.

Firstly, I'm undecided as to whether I'd find the extra noise useful, or annoying.
Grenades are fairly easy to aim, and it should require a bit of skill to judge when to throw it. We don't need to add something like this to make it too easy for people.

Grenades are another art meaning to be mastered along with the other weapons, and I think that way it should stay.
I am voting no.

Isn't the ultimate goal of any form of entertainment to bring joy to as many people as possible? Besides, it can be made an option in the configuration files if you dislike it, or replaced in the sound files. It will be helpful for new players though.

New players don't need to hold hands in everything they do.
The gameplay on AoS is very simple. You point where you want to aim, and click - it generally goes where you placed it. So long as you've read up on the controls/readme, it isn't difficult to pick up.

'to bring joy to as many people as possible' - if a game is too easy, it brings joy to no-one. Although grenade ticks doesn't make the entire game too easy, it just makes timing grenades very simple, negating from the joy you get from progressing through the stages of the game.

Sometimes people don't read the controls. I mean when you have people who don't understand instructions being explained in the in-game chat, not taking the flag back, not vote-kicking...

There are many, many people who like easy-going, casual games (I'm looking at Farmville's explosive popularity). I pick up AoS usually when I am bored and have free time. Besides, the majority of the difficulty comes from opposing players, who would also have the same advantage if ticking were implemented.

Well, the problem I guess is that we would need to ask new players about this, and they don't use the forums. They might not understand English, or they might not know how to use the chat or just don't want to talk about it, leading to bias in any survey conducted.

I stick to TGM,this problem is easy to handle my friend, you just need to put in the instructions of how to learn in the blue text in chat(It's a text that will at a special time or hour show up,with this I mean the text that the admins of a server put up to advertise or show something).
Also people learns from their mistakes(If not then stick to the last sentence i made)and I think that the controls aren't so hard after a time.

No no, grenades don't tick, and I have no problem to judge when to throw them.

Why should there be no learning curve at all?

About the realism argument: It is invalidated because this is a video game we're discussing. Gameplay > Realism. In real-life men do not run around wearing bright green and blue uniforms, but you don't complain about that since it was in the game at its inception. If grenade ticking was in in the first version you guys wouldn't complain about it either. If you want realism go play ARMA2, it's free as well.
Why do you guys all act like this will eliminate the learning curve? Instead of focusing on technical things like grenade timing, new players will now have time to focus on tactics to outsmart the enemy.

Just because it was hard for the current playerbase to learn doesn't mean that Ben should keep it this way for new players. On the contrary, you should be helping him make the game a better experience for them. We are all technically beta testers right now, to ensure that the finished product is of proper quality for a wider audience. Everything is subject to change, and you all should have know this when you first downloaded the file that said aos0XXinstall.msi. We should be grateful that we are even allowed to play it. I hate this elitism that develops over time with gaming communities, and in societies in general. Are you really that concerned about new players usurping your position in a VIDEO GAME?

I'm really motivated that if this was in the first version(To example)then people would just make a thread like this then just complain about this games ease.
I'm fully concerned of that.
Plus if we had that now then it would ruin the difficult.
Do you think it's fun to play a game where it's just so easy for everybody?

It will STILL be hard for NEW players because they are playing against EXPERIENCED players with good AIMING skills and KNOWLEDGE of the MAPS and advanced TACTICS. If you gave an Xbox-COD kiddie Counter-Strike 1.6 on the PC they would still suck because they aren't used to the controls, the gameplay, and the maps. If you gave an ancient Roman legion M-16s and threw them against a squad of modern US Marines they would still lose because they would not yet fully understand what they're working with. All games should strive towards a model of simple-to-learn, but difficult-to-master. Games like checkers, chess, and soccer are still played today even though they were developed a long time ago because they have these qualities, and they will still be played in the future because these qualities make for a timeless experience that anyone can appreciate.
