How are we going to distribute our game mods now that...

For all things AoS!

How are we going to distribute our game mods now that...

Postby TheOperator » Mon Jan 23, 2012 10:12 pm

...pretty much all filesharing sites are taken down or threatened to be taken down? We use DDL sites for legitimate reasons and its not the websites fault that people use their sites for illegal purposes even when trying to work with copyright laws to delete illegal material. Its like banning cars because people are transporting contraband in them!

Anyway, I don't want to use limewire, and emailing people the files who want our mods would extremely difficult, so what would people on this site propose we do?

MediaFire probably won't be taken down. MegaUpload was using illegal content to make money (Premium memberships), but MediaFire is used for mostly legitimate reasons.

Mediafire
Dropbox
Box - https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... akabcbjmbl
And over 9000 more sites and services.

sidenote: I would prefer people use dropbox and also EMBED IMAGES. FFS people should stop using imgur, it is shitty.

Meh, I am pretty sure that it's fine to prevent people from doing illegal things is a good idea.

Uploading copies of your own files for backup = legal, so what they were doing was to ensure people do legal things.
Pretty sure this is yet another case of USA trying to be intimidating and failing hardcore.

Mediafire isn't going anywhere.
MegaUpload only got ousted because it promoted and harbored pirated content. Mediafire, on the other hand, has policies against that stuff.

What's it called... There was a site specifically and purely for game mods. I cannot for the life of me remember it's name though.

/disagree

Pirated content was removed from its search and "top files" list. I don't think anyone can say that they promoted pirated content if in fact they hid it. They did this because it is legal to use a website to back up your data, thus they are not only following the law (supreme court ruled multiple times websites are not responsible for the content their users upload), but they are also trying to make sure that their users do not break the law (above and beyond the call of duty as it were).

Mediafire is just as at risk - in that it has done nothing wrong.

I suspect the US is just trying to make an example of MegaUpload, this is not the start of a crusade.

Stack could probably hook us up with some "illegal stuff" ;)

You see, here is the thing. Ben could allow it, which would not make it illegal. Same goes with everything else on the internet. Though, I don't see what our problem would be? We wouldn't be copying his guns. Gosh, how would they even know if we were to use his guns as a base? You might as well start from scratch.

It is perfectly legal to distribute .kv6 and .pngs ... Ben does not own the models and images made by other people. At least I don't remember clicking accept to anything like that.

I use box, which is the handiest damn service I've ever used. Allowing my friends to become 'collaborators' gives the t ability to add, edit, and remove all the files within a folder. Downloads are easy to share, and when you make an update the url doesn't even change.
