Required forum-based registration would discriminate against these and others who don't (or can't) use the forums. By definition, they also have no representation in this discussion and can't argue their side. It would be unfair to neglect this essential part of our community. They have just as much right to enjoy the game as we do.
I really do like the idea itself though, and would love to see it used in a more conservative way. Optional registration would allow stat tracking and nickname protection, but not necessarily help track bans. But it's a definite option
Just because registering gives you a forum account, doesn't mean you have to use the forums. It would only alienate people who don't have an email address, or who are just too lazy to register.
Furthermore, nobody has the "right" to enjoy this game - ever heard the phrase "privilege, not a right"? If you had the right, then Ben would be punished for violating your right to play the game if he somehow stopped everyone from playing. Instead, it's a privilege - you get to play the game because you have internet access and the game is made available for free by its creator. Excluding those who can't be bothered to take a few minutes to receive a confirmation email sounds perfectly fair to me, considering all the abuse that goes on by members of this "essential" part of our community.
Really though, I don't care how it goes down. It seems reasonable to be able to change your displayed IGN, while not being able to change your account name (which should be visible to admins only). Also I like using the pyspades stats page so having that implemented for any server would be awesome :D
