Neither free men nor slaves, the Janissaries were the Ottoman empire's elite warriors. Taken from their families at the age of 10 or 12, these Janissaries-in-training would learn nothing but warfare and be subject to harsh discipline every moment of the rest of their lives. They were forbidden from marrying or learning any skill that did not directly relate to warfare. With an incredible war record, the Janissaries were the single most feared military unit of their time. And now you can be one, too!

In 1916 the Canadian Expeditionary Force was short on light machine guns, so they did what any enterprising army would do and made some out of the other rifles they had lying around. The result: the Huot. Why are the elite Janissaries using these obscure Canadian rifles? Are they visionaries? Are they time travellers? It's a mystery for the ages.

Dutch for "thunder pipe", the blunderbuss is one of the first extant shotgun styled weapons. Its short stock and incredibly loud report makes it a weapon rarely used by the subtle marksman, but it remains a popular weapon for close-quarters warfare.

Well, it's a shovel. Despite being the elite military unit of their country, Janissaries are still expected to be capable of digging and fortifying positions when necessary. In a pinch, it can also be used to strike an enemy, although that is not its primary function.

One of the finest hand-to-hand weapons ever created, the scimitar was originally adopted to be used by cavalry, who needed a weapon that could be used while bearing down on enemies. The curved blade ensured that it would not become stuck and lost and that each slash was given as much leeway as possible. In ground combat it is lethal as well, lending itself to a fluid fighting style that came to characterize the entire Middle Eastern region.
