Yeah, as far as I can see that's the only real reason someone wouldn't want this.

I think it will be a good idea, but only if name changing stays with it.
In another game I used to play we had display names, which means your forum/login name stays the same but your display/ign can be changed to whatever you like.

If you can change your name easily, then that defeats the purpose of a registration system as people will still be able to impersonate. Not to mention it will totally shoot down the idea of banning by nickname. If you can ban by nickname AND IP, bans would be much more difficult to evade.

That would hurt them hyper nick changers.Luckly i aint gonna change my nick.I dont hack.I dont Impersonate ppl.So a registration system wouldnt hurt me unless.Yeah there is a unless.Unless username demo would be non usable username.Alot of games with a registration system dont alow ppl to use the name demo. That worries me a bit.

We could do it similar to Steam, with a solid username, and a changeable nickname that is what actually gets displayed.

So, if this gets implemented, will current forum users be automatically registered in-game, or will we have to do it separately?

Definitely think it will be a good thing. I can see very few negatives next to the positives.

As I said in my post, everyone could have an ID number that doesn't change and a changeable nickname. You could ban this ID and check for aliases just as you do for IP.

>/ID zinger
KomradeZinger's ID is 204039584.
>/Alias zinger
Known aliases of KomradeZinger are: Kirk, Zinger, THE_REAL_ATHEIST.
>/banID 204039584
KomradeZinger banned.

OR

>/ban zinger
KomradeZinger (ID 204039584) banned.

maybe just give a person a set number of aliases (around 3-5)

that way a person can login with an alias instead of their regular name. you could also make it so you cannot make your alias the same as someone else's alias or regular name and if someone has already taken your regular name or alias you can contact a forum admin to help you out.

I like Zinger's idea of fixed IDs better.

There could be a specific server command that displays the ID of the player's forum account. IF it doesn't match, then it's a fake player.

Also, maybe we could improve the forum's "Friend System" with it. You could chose an option so that Everyone, No-one, or only your friends may "follow" you into a server.
To a Physicist, white and black is the presence and absence of color.
To a Fine Artist, white and black are just shades and tints of color.
To a Painter, any paint that you could get into a can is a color.
THIS color, on the other hand, is #b4d455.

Could you please allow for two character names? I'd like to be known as TB, not TBS.

Your options should only be your forum username or ign. Wouldnt want ppl impersonating Tgm or something.

We can already impersonate people now. Most server admins catch impersonators and deal with them, and even when they don't, they can only spread rumors. Even then, one can go on #AoS and see if that was the real Tgm or whoever.

We have been able to change our name since .01, and the community is still here, so impersonating really isn't an issue.
