Not a mind controller, in the HL lore it is suggested that he is a space businessman of sorts, hired by another much more advanced species to take care of the Combine

Gordon just happens to be an employee for that species. In HL1 Gordon was supposed to attract the Combine to earth by killing Nihilant, that higher species want to use Earth as a battlefield against the Combine. In HL1 Gordon just thinks he is doing what it takes to survive and save the earth, in HL2 he thinks that he is saving the humans and the people he loves, but in fact he is just cleaning up the mess and finishing the job.

Suggesting G-Man is not man. Also did you notice all that scars on Nihilanth? Its seem that he was enslaved by Combine, and he and his minions escaped to Xen. Not sure who is that 'higher species' through. It would be even much more advance than Combine, eh?
Wonder when Combine is destroyed, what will happen.... Guess that we got enslave by that "higher species"...

G-Man is not human. As suggested as "he is not conformable with human speech" (I don't remember where i heard this, but its true). And the Combine were chasing the Vortigaunt race for a long time, and the Vortigaunt found Xen to be a safe place, so they settled. Eventually the Combine found Xen and started an attack, and managed to enslave some of the Vorts, which by coincidence was around the time the resonance cascade took place. The Vortigaunts took that as an opportunity to escape, the unslaved ones fled to other locations out of Black Mesa, and the ones that you fight in HL1 are the enslaved ones who were just told to attack you.

Vorts are not native to Xen, actually nothing really is native to Xen, the headcrabs and other Xen creatures took a ride to earth via the resonance cascade portal to earth just for the fun of it
