The lack of teamwork and what we can do about it

Postby PXYC » Tue Apr 03, 2012 9:53 pm

You have probably noticed, as I have, the lack of teamwork that made this game great and different from the others. What implementation caused this lack of teamwork? Was it just that we got a bad crowd to play Ace of Spades? Is it something missing from the game, and if so, what is this missing element that would make this game fun to play again?

Pretty much why I exclusively play killing-only game modes now. CTF is "CAPTURE THE FLAG" for obvious reasons, not "LONGER TDM FOR KILLWHORING." It's not that bad, considering that kills DO count towards the final score, and every team needs some slayers. But babel...oh god.

Servers with a regular clientèle usually are good for teamwork, Shams for example along with Minit as well, Though I confess Babel is the odd child, The idea is great but the towers are usually destroyed and never properly rebuilt again and again.

Well here are my such ideas:

Servers Gained Popularity:

When you joined an 8/32 server, you liked it. Not to mention, if you joined 1/12 servers on the list, you loved it. It was hard to do stuff by yourself, so it was scarce to see someone roam the battlefield alone. Now I can "one man army" my way to the top. Now there's no reason to go along with a group and work together when there are 29/32 people active.

New Features/Pyspades:

The old 0.26 servers were simple. You knew you had to get that intel, and you knew it wouldn't be easy. Now, with all these new features, it isn't a doubt on your mind. You don't need to jump every block or walk to do it. Pyspades, as an example, offers alot, but tends to slide away from the game itself. With all these new gamemodes and features, there is no way to exactly sustain teamwork. People would rather play that new arena gamemode, rather than that old shabby ctf.

Maps:

The new maps offer all the protection you need. No need to help a bud on the battlefield build a fort and what not. All your bridges, tunnels, and hideouts are made for you. No one wants to use that ugly, bland gen map.

I really do miss teamwork. Getting nine kills an hour, tapping the intel, or even building something majestic meant it all.

I'm not trying to be xenophobic here, but I think that part of this problem is that a lot (50%) of players in popular servers cannot speak English fluently.

1. Ban the other half of Poland (minus Salina)
2. Ban Brazil (minus Kalin)
3. ??????
4. PROFIT

A reward for capping the intel might work as well too.

BTW I pressed edit instead of quote on your post, PXYC. I've been doing that a lot today :>

Hey man, this is up to the people in the server you are currently playing in. With AoS getting more popular every day there may even be some big language barriers, there is really nothing you can do about it in the actual development of the game per se.

Just try to communicate with your team and hope for the best, that would be my bro-tip.

this is a huge issue

IMO a commander type mode could work, however the issue is choosing commanders. Maybe we could try an experiment sometime with a server mod/admin acting as commander.

Diversity is great for the game's growth in terms of popularity!

All I can say is:
A) Talk to your team, try to communicate with them even if you are only saying small things like "good job", "nice", "help me", etc.
B) Find people to play with before you join the server so they can join you too.

It is not THAT big of a deal in my opinion, it will always depend on the place you are playing, not on the game in general whatsoever.

IMO there should be Official Server which are on-line 24/7 for countries with a lot of players, like USA, UK, Brazil, France(dont know if it has all that many players), Poland, and others. Of course, it wouldnt be one server for each country with players.
The problem would be hosting this, if Ben pays someone to do this we would need to turn AoS into a p2p game, or we would need to find people who are abl to host 24/7 those servers on their Homelands.

^This.
Or we can find a way to intergrate Google Translate into game chat.

Also, lots of people don't look at the chat at all.

If I had a cookie for every time one of these threads were created...
But it's addressing an isssue, so there's nothing wrong with it.
Sadly, I cannot contribute much to this conversation apart from returning the intel bounuses.

In-game chat needs changing. Even with people speaking the same language, it's hard to make teamwork because the chat disappears all to quickly, especially if you are in a fire-fight and don't have time to look down.

The game really needs a proper chat client, allowing you to scroll through the past ~5 mins of chat.

Other than that, I'd say the language barrier is there, so some ability to place markers for your team, either on the map or in real time would be nice.
