That wasn't SOPA. Those were sites trying to get the message across that SOPA is bad. SOPA/PIPA have not yet been passed.

I'm honestly just as annoyed with sopa protests as the bill itself. I get it, sopa is bad, but it hasn't passed yet, so can I continue using the internet please?
I've had multiple events get postponed today because the damn websites for them were protesting. You don't need to completely shut down to raise awareness.

Err, it will stop anything. They won't just block DNS server access (domain names), they'll actually get the 'infringing' site taken completely off the Web. Knowing the IP address wouldn't help. And besides, most IP addresses are non-static. Even Google's changes frequently, so you'd be screwed unless you trialed-and-errored about 20 IPs every time you wanted to connect to a site. Also, for example they could get this entire forum taken down just if someone posted a link to copyright material.

That's an incredibly short-sighted view. If SOPA DID get passed, most of the Internet as we know it would cease to exist, including most, if not all, of the websites that protested yesterday. In some of these sites going black for one day, it's raising awareness and anti-SOPA support by showing people what would happen if it was passed.
Don't get pissy cause a couple of websites got shutdown for one day, get pissy that they could be shutdown forever.

It's not just America that will be affected, either. This act, currently supported by idiotic, greedy senators in the pockets of the big corps (whose lobbyists are the ones that wrote the act, not anyone from the US Government!), will allow corporations to take down almost any site without any warning, be it foreign or on America soil. If you don't want an Internet policed by a bunch of fat, money-hungry retards who've probably never even used the Web, then you'll support the anti-SOPA/PIPA protests.

*sigh*....
The point is I've already done everything I can personally do against SOPA. I've already signed every petition that's been thrown at me, and I already understand everything that it'd do if put into place, so don't tell me my views are "short sighted." With that in mind, it's pretty frustrating having half my internet shut down willingly trying to get me to do and learn what I've already done. Not to mention I find it unnecessary to completely black out any website, having a popup and banner with info is more than enough of an eyecatcher to raise awareness without actually disrupting the website's use.

Personally, I'm conflicted over my feelings towards SOPA. on the one hand I sure like pirating my entertainment and have no plans to stop... but on the other hand, yeah it is technically stealing and when I put myself in the other fellas shoes, I see why they really want to do something about it.

on top of that I realize that technology moves so fast that is all the money and time put in to SOPA even worth it? and again on the flip side, is all the time spent getting worked up over opposing it worth it either?

:-/ so conflicted...

The reason why people are up in arms against SOPA is not becuase they support Piracy, its because SOPA will mean a lot of sites including; youtube, facebook, twitter hell even google could be blocked and even taken down by the US government as it may host copyrighted material without permission.
If this passes and someone posts a video on this site of someone playing AoS on the forums then the entire site can be knocked down since the said person didn't have permission from ben to display the game, thats how effed up this law is!
It will have far reaching consequences as any site with a .com at the end of its domain is fair game to US law.

I see your point, and I commend you for doing all you can, but not everyone else is, and that's why it was important for sites like Wikipedia to go down for a day. Actually forcing people to experience what it would be like if these acts were passed is a little more powerful than a splashscreen most people won't read before clicking the close button. Sorry if I was a bit of a knob in my above post. Didn't mean to be!
