Official Dubstep Appreciation Thread

Postby LASTofS » Thu Mar 15, 2012 2:47 pm

There's a difference between the original dubstep era and the post-dubstep era. Whilst I don't mind Skrillex's music it should not be considered "dubstep" since he's pretty much his own genre; brostep.

Burial, Skream, Benga, and Rusko are a few of my personal favourites.

Look, somebody who cannot understand the immense amount of musical talent and skill that goes into true dubstep, and is obviously mistaking it to poor brostep. I'm can guarantee he hasn't heard much more than Skrillex and whatever else his possibly hipster friends have introduced him to. Hey mate, tell me that this isn't entirely musical and incredibly difficult to make: http://soundcloud.com/vexare/the-clockmaker What you ahve to realize is that 99% of dubstep producers have a very rich musical background, especially piano. And the ones who don't, well they end up not making it very big.
----

Personally, not a fan of Skrillex, but I do like quite a few "Brosteppers", mainly Flux Pavilion, Doctor P, DatsiK, and Excision. While some might look at the term Brostep as a slur, I find it almost necessary because the two genres are so far apart. Where you have a demanding sub-bass in true dubstep, almost all Brostep is focused entirely on modulated mid-bass.

That being said, I've been really digging "Ashtray Wasp" off of Burial's new(ish) album Kindred EP. Take a listen, my favorite part is right around 9:20

Is mayonnaise an instrument?
To a Physicist, white and black is the presence and absence of color.
To a Fine Artist, white and black are just shades and tints of color.
To a Painter, any paint that you could get into a can is a color.
THIS color, on the other hand, is #b4d455.

In my opinion, many of the electronica genres split into two parts after a significant incubation period.

My point is simple;

No music instrument involved, no vocals = not music. Find something else to call your "Dubstep".

I can see how you can say a computer is not an instrument, because technically it's not, but to say dubstep, and all genres of electronic music for that matter, isn't music is ignorant. As for "Find something else to call your "Dubstep".", what would you have in mind? The name is pretty fitting, and fits the genre exactly. If you think there isn't much skill involved, I challenge you to create anything near the standards of even mediocre electronic music.

Oh how was expecting the "You have no right to not like something unless you're capable of better" response.

Comes up everytime someone doesn't like dupstep. Think it's time for you to find a different defense for your computer generated noise. Current one's stale and predictable.

Considering you ignored my original response, I don't much care to try and educate you on the difference between noise and music. They said the same thing about Jazz, and then about Rock, so preach somewhere else mate, nobody gives a duck.

Difference being, both of your examples featured actual musical instruments.

When computer becomes musical instrument, let me know.
