What can be done to get the explosion of AoS popularity back

Postby Articsledder » Sun Mar 11, 2012 10:31 pm

Ok, when the game first launched, it was huge. There were probably a 100000 plays in the first month. So what could be done to get some of those people back? A lot left due to hacking and really bad lag, but what can be done to show the game has changed?

If we have more people they'll just be viewed as "third wave" (The first wave being people who only played with the rifle and the second wave occurring in more recent months). They'll be COD Kids looking for another shooter, but they will want it to be *their* shooter, that is, they'll demand changes in game mechanics, which Ben, probably having monetized the game by then, will oblige.

If you did really want more people, get aimbot protection (Goonhaven has been running it for months), add Badmin to every server (grief protection is better) and stop changing game mechanics (because if you do, you'll lose at least one player *raises hand*)

i think it will just be a matter of time until they cross paths with AoS again by word of mouth and give it a second chance. the average number of concurrent players seems to be continually rising. currently there are anywhere from 500 to 2000 players online at any given time, with peaks just over 2200. if anything i see the popularity of AoS increasing slowly but surely.

More Different game types. Capture the intel is good, but all the game modes (apart from TOW) seem to follow the same general aims. After a while it is all just the same thing over and over. Even just more servers running the already different game types would be good.

More regular updates and patches. I know it won' be easy to do this one with an indie game, but the updates do seem to come way to slow when there are problems with the game.

More advertising. Either through word of mouth or getting the game out to games websites. Get a large games website running a small piece on the game and the influx of players could be huge.

As said before, the number of players is slowly rising, so I think that the best thing to do is to make sure that people don't leave the game. This way, word of the game would spread faster and the community could start growing exponentially.

I think that more frequent updates are needed. Each update doesn't have to be huge, either. I remember when in the early days of AoS, there was an update about once a week. Usually there was only one change, but that one change made the game new and exciting to play again.

I know that Ben isn't paid for this, but when we do get enough players, making the game pay-to-play wouldn't be a bad option. With the money Ben could not only expand the game (i.e. buying a server for registration data), but also he would have a reason to continue to pump out updates.

Seriously? I don't know about the rest of you, but half the reason I play AoS in the first place is because it's simple and free. Nothing fancy, and it keeps one's wallet full. Really, I think that's part of what makes AoS so great. It's elegant in its simplicity, and you don't have to shell out any money for it. This may not be what you had in mind, but the worst thing I can imagine happening to AoS* is becoming one of those "free" games that are free to sign up for but you need to pay to make worth playing. In short, if I wanted a fancy, pricey game, I would just play minecraft.

*Aside from AoS being banned by the UN or Ben getting kidnapped by terrorists or something like that

Strongly against p2p.

It would ruin the game. The only reason I tried this game was because it was free.

I doubt most people could look past the graphics and even try it if it was p2p.

I would rather have the option between a version with only some features that is free and a complete one that has full features.

Keep in mind the decentralized nature of AoS (with all the servers being run by the community) would prevent Ben from adding a registration cost, or anything pertaining to the actual game. Rather, it's more likely to go the route of advertising (I wouldn't mind a map consisting of a giant Wal Mart)

Whoops, look like I accidentally the original purpose of the thread...

Anyway, I wouldn't want to pay for this game at any point. If we were forced to pay anytime in the near future (a year or two), the game would die rather quickly. At the same time, the game will "progress" a lot slower without any sort of funding. Honestly, not paying is a lot better for all of us, but I wouldn't mind paying a little bit for the game I love so much.
