Squad chat?

Postby KevinLancaster » Wed Feb 29, 2012 11:24 pm

Thought it would be a nice feature to increase coordination in squads without cluttering up the main/team chat.

Would be a nice pyspades script, but what would be the difference between squad chat and team chat? Still communicating with your team members.
To a Physicist, white and black is the presence and absence of color.
To a Fine Artist, white and black are just shades and tints of color.
To a Painter, any paint that you could get into a can is a color.
THIS color, on the other hand, is #b4d455.

Yeah, but with multiple squads, what if you're trying to plan something with your own? Commands might get mixed up between squads. It would also help make things easier to understand if the game ever gets to the point where teams/clans plan out strategies for games.

How exactly is pyspades coded? Is there some sort of tutorial for it?

Implementing a traditional squad chat through pyspades would involve another tedious /<command> to learn and remember - I avoided it for that reason. However, I could automatically append a squad tag to the team chat, which might help. Thoughts?

Well, I was thinking it could be a short command, like /s or something, but I guess appending a tag (or maybe changing the chat colour) would be easier to implement and essentially perform the same function.

I wonder if you could use a hyphen or some other symbol to denote squad chat?

It's programmed in Python and I don't think there's a tutorial on learning how it works so much, but if you're interested, I'd suggest reading a primer on Python, and then start reading run.py, commands.py, etc. and try to get a feel for how things work. You might also join #pyspades, they're usually pretty helpful.

I put in the tag, servers updated with it will show teamchat like so:

Triplefox : mysquad : Hello squad

I also tried these variations:

Triplefox : <mysquad> Hello squad
Triplefox : (mysquad) Hello squad

But they didn't look as good. Changing the basic "name : message" formatting and team coloring behavior isn't easy from a script, I'd have to drill all the way down to some of the basic functionality in server.py to make those kinds of changes.

Players not in squads or global chatting will be formatted normally.

Showing up late to a thread...but here goes
How about squad chat is initiated like this:
/ hay squad guys
Where the command is slash space. Since chat can be opened with a slash automatically as the first character with the slash key, all you would have to do is hit space and type your message. A lot easier than even a single letter command.
