There are enough public facts for a good detective to have a general idea about how AoS development is proceeding and is funded currently, although the details of the story are extremely complicated(I only know some of it myself, even).
Doing the detective work will also tell you that in the future there will be a monetization strategy. But none of those plans are final, and Ben(as with most things) has kept it all a secret. You are welcome to voice your opinions on how the game should fund itself, of course. Assume anything is possible :)
Funding through Kickstarter wouldn't be a bad idea though, it certainly would help though.
Whatever strategic monetization plans Ben has are for future plans, I'm talking about right now.
Funding through Kickstarter would boost the whatever funds the game currently has and secure it up until the game is solid enough to monetize.
The question is not whether "What if people don't like AoS and don't fund it?" so why not go for it? Money is good for motivation and progress.
