Well, firstly, the free version is only going to record 30 seconds of footage at a time.
Once you've launched fraps, go into a game, and you should see your frame rate in one corner. If not, check the 'show overlay' box in the first tab that opens. Then change your start recording hotkey to whatever you want. Once you're in game, you should see your frame rate overlay in yellow. When you press your 'start recording' hot key, the frame rate overlay should turn red. This means you are recording. Press that hotkey again to stop recording (your frame rate will return to yellow). Your recording will be saved in a folder called Movies by default.
