I have, on past occasions, tried to make a map using the Voxel Editor. I couldn't. Not that I couldn't make it work, but because everything is so obtuse. I think that's mostly why a lot more people stick with making scopes and weapons and not maps.
However, I have a simple suggestion that would probably make the map editor 80% more user friendly. And that suggestion is this: Make the controls more intuitive. I'm not a programmer, but changing what button does what would hardly be "a major overhaul". Something like this:
A, S, W, D - Move (instead of the arrow keys)
Mouse 1 - Place a single block (instead of insert)
Mouse 2 - Remove a single block (instead of delete)
And when you're in paint mode, mouse 1 becomes paint the selected block.
Simple. And everything else can pretty much remain the same. But let's face it, when you have to move your mouse to the right area, hit insert, move the mouse to where you want the next block to go and then hit insert again ... it's just frustrating. And having the place/remove block buttons on the mouse would probably increase map production time.
What do you guys think?
