During this battle, the game literally cheated. I wish I were making this up. As you can see by the replay and this picture, Jirachi had +5 special defense. Even with a water gem in the rain, Hydropump could not one hit KO Jirachi. It should've done a little over half BUT pokemon online is pretty buggy when it comes to calculating critical hits so... okay. I guess you won Iron, congrats!

Critical hits bypass any defensive buffs. I really should get into competitive again but eh, 5th gen changed a lot.

Whatever, I threw together a little a team together so if anyone wants to battle (OU) we can.

Plus you need to factor in that Jirachi is only somewhat bulky (100/100) and its being hit with a powerful move by a somewhat powerful pokemon (base 90 sp attk) using a ton of multipliers. Unless the politoed had 0 ivs/evs in sp attack and had a nature going against it, in addition to you making a max sp def jirachi(sp def boosting nature with 252/252 hp/sp def ev spread), I have a hard time believing it WOULDNT OHKO it.

I ran it through a damage calc and yes my jirachi is specially defensive AND has max HP evs. I don't like those fire blasts ;P

Tl;dr
With all those stats, Politoed does 60%-70% damage with hydro cannon, but if it was fire, it would be OHKO with out critical.

that's cool, I have Pearl and some of the older ones, but I haven't played them in a while. I think I have Crystal on my phone, so I play that sometimes too. I will give this program a try, it looks pretty fun

I think (based on what you told me and my own experiences) that if you use a move 4 times in a row, the other pokemon gets a free crit on your pokemon (It does this to prevent recover spam).
So, you overused cosmic power and the game punished you (you could kind of call it cheating by the game :P) and Iron got a free crit that OHKO jirachi. Oh and Iron had a water gem.
