Why are they in prison ?Drugs, murder, rape?

Not quite. They have three classes of tools, AA, A, and B. AA items are things that can cut metal, those are in the armory, outside the prisons with the weapons. Class A items are things like screwdrivers, pliers, etc. Class B items are blunt items, like wire strippers and pipe wrenches.
They are 90% non-violent offenders, most of which are not citizens of the U.S. They get caught here w/o papers, serve time there, and get deported. This makes it a minimum security facility. There are Cubans, Spaniards, Jamaicans and whoever else, not just Mexicans.
Most belong to gangs, as being in a gang is necessary if you want to survive. They prey on ones (Us, the staff) that appear to be mentally weak. A wrinkled uniform, showing up a minute late, or anything else like this is enough for them to use against us to get us fired. They are w/o a doubt, world class psycho-analysts.
We have some kids fresh out of High School in our class... only one of them doesn't have some fear in their eyes, the others won't last. There's only been one attack on an officer, he got stabbed in the spine with a 3-inch screwdriver and lived. Other than that, it stays super quiet.
