Would you like to have a day just to have fun?
Well, a lawmaker from Samar wants July 10 of every year set aside for fun, in honor of the country's king of comedy, Rodolfo Vera "Dolphy" Quizon Sr.
If passed into law, a bill filed by Eastern Samar Representative Ben Evardone will designate July 10, Dolphy's day of death, as Filipino Fun Day, a special non-working holiday.
Dolphy died Tuesday night after a bout with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease that had him confined at Makati Medical Center since June. There had been calls from various sectors to honor him with a National Artist award, but these have yet to bear fruit.
Evardone said declaring a Filipino Fun Day in honor of Dolphy "is the least we Filipinos, individually and collectively touched by the Comedy King, can return for every good laugh Tito Dolphy drew out from us."
Evardone said Dolphy made it "more fun in the Philippines." He said it was more fun because "there is one Filipino in the Philippines and elsewhere who, through his more than sixty years of existence, never failed to lighten up our day."
Dolphy, 83, had been performing on stage, radio, television, and films since he was 17.
If July 10 is declared a non-working holiday, employees who have to go to work that day will be paid 130 percent of their daily rate and an additional 30 percent of their hourly rate if they work overtime.
