[PSA] What To Do When Dealing With A Hacker/Griefer/Nuisance

Postby ReubenMcHawk » Sat Jun 30, 2012 7:55 pm

So I feel the need to write this topic up, having just dealt with a good 15 or so aimbotters this morning on Minit. Here's what to do and what not to do when there's a griefer or hacker on the server you're on.

DON'T just say "griefer' or "hacker": If all you do is say "AIMBOT", "STOP GRIEFING", or "HACKER", it helps nobody. If I'm watching a server from an IRC channel, I can't just tell who's hacking or griefing by what you say. Sometimes even in-game it's hard to tell, unless their name is dominating the kill feed completely or they're griefing right next to me. So please, take care to elaborate.

DON'T just say "Deuce9001 hacker" or "SnajperPL grief": This might be a bit of help, and it's an improvement, but that'll just alert the person in question that people can tell what they're doing, which'll cause him to either stop doing what they're doing, to avoid being caught and banned. I've gone in-game many times to see the accused cheater or griefer acting perfectly normal following being accused in global chat. This is, however, a good option if you're on a server with no admins.

DO start a votekick: Everyone seems to forget this exists. If you start a votekick on someone, it'll more than likely pass, depending on how obvious the guy is while hacking or how much he's griefing. Let's not forget the usual people that just do /y because they got killed or because the guy is on another team, they can work to your advantage in this.

DO use /admin": This is another one barely anyone uses. Doing "/admin <message>" will send a message to anybody on the server's IRC channel and everyone in-game logged in as an admin. This way, the admin knows who to look out for without they themselves knowing that they're being watched.

Thanks, and I hoped you all will heed my words and use my advice.

Good job Reuben, especially the first one. That's one of the most frustrating things as an admin seeing people whine about hackers/griefers without giving any information about who or where it's being done. The best thing to do in my opinion is to call them out by their number (as many players don't know what this means or that every player is ID'd by a number) so the griefer isn't alerted but the admin is.

Ex. "#25 is griefing"

+1

I'd also like to add that you should use the commands to your advantage.

If someone has a 35. ratio and you can tell they're hacking, it's nice that the admin knows. So many false accusations now'a days. Admins are more than likely going to approach the scene when they know what they're dealing with. (e.g. /admin Billy/#6 has griefed 83 of our teams blocks on Minit-Assault)

Same goes for /gc and /hackinfo, if non admins are allowed to use those commands.

Thanks, Reuben.

I find it extremely frustrating when I'm watching the server IRC's and not being able to find out the griefer or hacker everybody is complaining about.

I'll do my best to bump this thread if it doesn't get temporarily stickied. Word needs to go around.

By the time your common players can spot an aimbotter, the admins are seriously falling short on their job.

When I was running my server I spectated anybody who got a tiple kill just long enough to make theyre they were playing legit, and many times I was able to catch aimbotters (about 3-4 people who were good players that joined my server were aimbotters...kinda funny)

Well yes, it's easier to tell an aimbotter from actually being in the game than it is from the IRC. And you're implying that all aimbotters are the all-out, killfeed flooders. The subtle ones can take a while to notice.

Can I add that it's good sportsmanship to vote to kick griefers on the other team, and bots on your own. It's isnt tactical to let some jerk destroy the other teams entire defenses.

AFK's as well. It's not fair that most servers force you to have 16 people vote (or I guess, 15 with the initial kicker) just to get rid of someone who's been AFK for over an hour.

It's virtually impossible to get anyone to kick a "subtle" aimbotter anymore. I was playing on (I think Aloha?) Zombies and I spent half an hour trying to kick someone before just giving up (even though you could audibly hear multiple bullets from a shotgun, which incidentally didn't seem to have any sort of spread whatsoever).

I haven't even bothered starting votekicks on griefers in a long time, because ever since Goonhaven went down there's not really a lot of servers that necessitate building.

I love when they try to use a complicated name involving non-keyboard characters...

Bitch Please! I can ban you by number!

The advice on what to send in an /admin message is invaluable. I use it alot, but admittedly, I'm the

DON'T just say "Deuce9001 hacker" or "SnajperPL grief"

guy. So I'll definitely try to be more specific next time.
