Ok, I created a half-objective way to measure my satisfatcion with Linux and Windows. There are five items worth 20% satisfaction each.
1 GAMES - Windows has many more games than Linux. Getting Windows games to run on WINE can be hell, and that's when it works. Heavy flash games may run slower on Linux.
Linux: 10%
But it also happens that older Windows games often do not work on more modern Windows versions, though they should work. And I think it's on purpose, so that you have to buy other games.
Windows: 15%
2 OFFICE AND PRODUCTIVITY - Libre Office has a few compatibilty issues with Microsoft Office's X format, but that's it. The latest GIMP looks awesome. Things worked out well for any other Windows software I had to replace.
Linux: 15%
But older versions of Microsoft Office also can't read the new X format. I think that too was on purpose.
Windows: 15%
3 INTERNET BROWSING - Chrome is beautiful on Windows, Firefox is beautiful on Linux.
Both: 20%
4 HARDWARE AND STUFF - I can't get music on my cellphone anymore, I'm having trouble burning CDs, it doesn't recognize my old scanner nor my new scanner/printer.
Linux: 5%
But my scanner's software for Windows was a piece of shit (HP, don't buy from them), and I couldn't pick my frontend like I can with Linux. Also, Windows doesn't recognize the Brazilian Dvorak keyboard that I use, and it's annoying to install even the American Dvorak.
Windows: 15%
5 POLITICAL IDEOLOGY - Well, Linux is total libertarian communism! What can be better than that?
Linux: 20%
But that doesn't mean I despise capitalism. It's just a different basic approach to life... but Microsoft's meddling with genetically modified organisms makes it lose yet a few more points.
Windows: 10%
So it's 70% satisfaction for free, or 75% satisfaction for X moneys. Different people will get different results, but I think this can be a decent guideline.
