Don't trust what others say, Unity is nice and all but its heavy, cause of Compiz. I would say wait for Elementary OS Luna which comes out this summer, and it's already faster, much lighter than ubuntu.

Woohoo more elementary fans! Well yeah elementary is cool'n'all, though it still needs a lot of work, both system-wise and GUI-wise.

That's true! I was active in their Launchpad site, reporting bugs and such... Till my Luna install decided to die. LOL (It doesn't boots up anymore) I'm sure when it's done we will get a fantastic operating system.

I'd use Ubuntu always if i wouldn't have to use the damn console that much (I don't know many commands) and if it had more games.
I have a dual boot though.

Why would you have to use the console? There is a software center in Ubuntu.

I never had to use the terminal on linux ever, except for development purposes, and I do that on windows too, sometimes more often then on linux. There's lots of games for linux, and you can run more in vmware with windows if you want.

Actually, I have to use the terminal sometimes on Mint. You know, when things are not working as they should and you try to fix them manually... but it happened just as much on Windows.

I always come back to Windows because I need programs that are Windows-only. Look at all the programs you use, if more then say %15 don't work on Linux or don't have a Linux version then forget about it.

However, if all you do on your netbook is browse the web, Linux is best.

Ok, I created a half-objective way to measure my satisfatcion with Linux and Windows. There are five items worth 20% satisfaction each.

1 GAMES - Windows has many more games than Linux. Getting Windows games to run on WINE can be hell, and that's when it works. Heavy flash games may run slower on Linux.
Linux: 10%
But it also happens that older Windows games often do not work on more modern Windows versions, though they should work. And I think it's on purpose, so that you have to buy other games.
Windows: 15%

2 OFFICE AND PRODUCTIVITY - Libre Office has a few compatibilty issues with Microsoft Office's X format, but that's it. The latest GIMP looks awesome. Things worked out well for any other Windows software I had to replace.
Linux: 15%
But older versions of Microsoft Office also can't read the new X format. I think that too was on purpose.
Windows: 15%

3 INTERNET BROWSING - Chrome is beautiful on Windows, Firefox is beautiful on Linux.
Both: 20%

4 HARDWARE AND STUFF - I can't get music on my cellphone anymore, I'm having trouble burning CDs, it doesn't recognize my old scanner nor my new scanner/printer.
Linux: 5%
But my scanner's software for Windows was a piece of shit (HP, don't buy from them), and I couldn't pick my frontend like I can with Linux. Also, Windows doesn't recognize the Brazilian Dvorak keyboard that I use, and it's annoying to install even the American Dvorak.
Windows: 15%

5 POLITICAL IDEOLOGY - Well, Linux is total libertarian communism! What can be better than that?
Linux: 20%
But that doesn't mean I despise capitalism. It's just a different basic approach to life... but Microsoft's meddling with genetically modified organisms makes it lose yet a few more points.
Windows: 10%

So it's 70% satisfaction for free, or 75% satisfaction for X moneys. Different people will get different results, but I think this can be a decent guideline.

I disagree with the hardware part, everything worked for out of box with Ubuntu so far. Unlike in Windows 7.
