Some suggestions, based on other PVP servers:
-we use only one gameplay rule: don't join faction with sole purpose of griefing it. And it works, no need for "no griefing" or "no cannoning" rules
-require spoutcraft to join server = problem with x-rays solved
-I don't know too much about mods and plugins, but we use Essentials, Factions, GroupManager, OnlineUsers, ServerEvents, Spout, TexturePackMenu, vStopFire, WorldBorder; and it works.

Anyone know if it's possible to revert to an older version?
It might be on the kids computer, but if not I might have to resort to a torrent or something..
(it's not pirating if you own the game, right?)

edit: nvm, I had 1.0 installed on the kid's computer, just copied it over to my laptop and we're golden. :)

If you ever have a problem, delete your everything in your minecraft folder and redownload. It works, though you wont have anything saved and wont be able to join your singleplayer world as it will crash. Just a tip ;)
