I still trust Wikipedia, so:
A janitor or custodian (called caretaker in British English but also janitor in Scottish English, see American and British English differences) is a professional who takes care of buildings, such as hospitals and schools. Janitors are responsible primarily as cleaners, and often (though not always) some maintenance and security. Similar but more managerial duties (and usually not including cleaning, for example) are performed by a superintendent, often called building superintendent.

Possibly only have powers to delete posts and control the spam in threads. Instead of having the additional banning privileges.

Cleaning threads up, like a janitor.

I was told not to talk about them for whatever reason, I can't really imagine why.

I hope the user group isn't ACTUALLY called "janitor" when its finely being used. That's a tad demeaning.

Could call it: Sub Moderator / Sub Mod / Sentry / Sentinel / Mini-Mod / etc.

Well since MIKULIStestaccount is the same person as mikuli, that doesn't really count.

Anyway, TL;DR I believe the janitor system is so they can lower their standards slightly with forum administration. Seeming as finding people to be moderators etc is a long and hard process due to the standards they are looking for. And the forums need more help...hence the janitor system.

If anything I'd say Mini-Mod is demeaning, but beggars can't be choosers.

Another possible name for that userlevel could be fake mod. But yeah, that's a moderator-class with somewhat reduced powers. It was created as a kind of a proof of concept thing, with the possibility of assigning few users to that task - but we made them Moderators instead.

It could also be a hidden group with an indifferent forum rank or name color from any other regular member. We'll see.
