How do I run a server for local networks

Postby Suhler » Thu Feb 16, 2012 4:00 pm

Ok, I'm going to sound like an absolute noob here *ahem*PAIN*ahem* But I'm not familiar with the way AOS servers are set up. I would like to run a server for the students at my school to connect to on their free time, which everyone who plays AOS in my school has a lot of. I help out with the school servers occasionally, and I know that using a personal computer to run the server locally won't cause any problems as long as it only broadcasts locally. So, the question is, How do I set the server up to run only over the local network? Before you ask, I am going to check with the IT people who run the servers, but the Wireless and lan system aren't even connected, so a Wireless N server should not have any consequences on the server connection speeds that they are always worrying about. I'm sure they are going to ask for me to put some sort of Acceptable Use policy system to run between the server and computers, but I'll ask. Regardless, I still need to know how to set it up :D Please respond soon!

Does the aos:// link when you hosted by server.exe not working ?
I thought that everytime I use server.exe, they supplies a aos:// link. Lan should okay.

Do you connect to the master server when you set up the server? I don't think I can port forward for this server because i do not have access to the routers, hence a "local Connection." Is there a system where i can set it up to connect to a local IP or make the sever correlate to a local IP, like Minecraft does?

Try these steps

1. Setup server on a machine attached to your local network, make note of the IP
2. Install Spadille along with aceofspades and use the direct connect option

pyegeoip isn't required, so don't worry about it too much.

just make sure your ace of spades port has been forwarded on your router

Adding to what knifeymoloko said, try it with Windows Firewall OFF if you still can't connect to master. If it works with Firewall off, try making a firewall exception.
Good luck :)

Thank you very much for the help. I have one question, thought. If I enter the game, alt+tab out of it, and leave the cursor over the AOS client, I see an aos:// address. I can connect to the server by using that number without having the master on, so how do I find that number without connecting then hovering over the client?

You can do /server in-game (or in IRC).

Thank you! one more problem.... kinda embarrassing... I don't have griefcheck on the server, which should come standard, even though I got the pyspades download from the official site PXYC linked to........... can someone send the .py script to me?

Edit: and I don't have !server either........

Hmm, blockinfo.py (griefcheck) SHOULD be in your scripts folder. If it's not, you can get it from the repository. [http://code.google.com/p/pyspades/source/browse/feature_server/scripts/blockinfo.py]

As far as !server, that code may not be included in the build you got. It would definitely work if you built from source though.

I think he meant he was running the command from IRC.
