There are ads that open a popup, or fast-forward you to a sit. Each time it happened, it was a virus. I have recently installed a popup blocker, so it shouldn't be a problem anymore.

Use OPERA Internet browser, It automatically blocks ALL pop-up window!

I use chrome with adblock and a popup blocker, it works wonders.

So, the final concussion is: If you get a virus, It's your own fault, because you can prevent it.

I always use ad.fly when I download SIMOX's skins, but I've never got any virus.

It says on the rules (as far as I know) that you MUST at least have a non-adfly link available.

It's only recommended because it's the mod creator who may will get less downloads because of adf.ly link.
