An interesting Heightmap tool

Postby Articsledder » Sun Apr 01, 2012 1:25 pm

I stumbled onto this tutorial on how to create heightmaps using google earth. It's interesting, I'm working on making one right now. A little confusing however. Heres the tutorial.

Edit: Man this is confusing. I've gotten the data open, the issue is you cant zoom in and get a very detailed map.

It doesn't help that your signature says "You're gonna carry that weight."

Using the instructions arcticsletter posted, I was able to grab a heightmap of somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains. Without doing any sort of editing whatsoever, I converted the heightmap to AoS and started playing. The results were a very choppy terrain that's hardly playable in Ace of Spades. [Rocky1.PNG, Rocky2.PNG]

After this, I decided to open up the heightmap in Photoshop and use the blur effect on the mountains. This made the blurred terrain more ideal for Ace of Spades! [smooth01.PNG, smooth02.JPG]

And for the last picture. The PNG was too large and you can only add 3 attachments to a post. So I converted it to a JPEG and attached it to a second post!
