Sneakers' Map Pack (Caverns, Pyramids, Mountains and More!)

Postby Sneakers » Mon Feb 06, 2012 2:37 am

Most of the maps are experiments in terrain generation and cave systems generated using Minecraft and WorldPainter and then converted using eloreda's Minecraft to AOS converter.

Complete pack download: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?a8ueo8k3i6h11z6

Included Maps:

Cavernous: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?07lbm6q4m7hzcyd

This map features rolling hills and some trees. Oh, and a giant cave system that tears through the surface:

Most of the surface is torn apart by the cave system, and the cave system can run quite deep. You can get anywhere on the map underground:

Here is the overview:

Gray areas are caves that break the surface. You can get around without using the cave system, but it will be slower. The cave system has multiple levels and steep drop-offs in some places.

Cavernous 2: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?1sv6s702vdjtl6u

This map is a lot like the one above, except the caverns are not as numerous. You can still get anywhere on the map without going to the surface, but the entrances don't dominate the surface as much:

The caves are a little tighter. In the cave system:

Travelling on the surface is much easier in this map. The cave system is better for sneaking around.

Ice Caverns: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?c9x4cqd1hqdd77h

This ice and snow themed map has a river that splits the map, large hills to snipe from, and lots of caverns:

Inside the caverns:

Looking out over a icy depression:

The blue spots on the overview below are caverns and icy depressions. I don't know why the depressions would form in the map generator, but they are quite cool in game (lake-like areas that are 4-7 blocks below the surrounding terrain). They are natural barriers that slow you down, which should help with defense. Overview:

Desert Caverns: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?76fdsd88710sb07

This is a map with the same cavern settings as Cavernous 2, but the blocks have a desert theme instead:

Sniper Hill: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?ps34o6921v6naz9

This map features a large mountain in the middle that is separated on each side by a river (facing the mountain here):

The mountain provides a good base for sniping anyone approaching it:

The top of the mountain has really rough terrain with small caves and holes. Be careful if you run into an enemy up here:

Overview:

Blue is closer to the mountain, but it is more vulnerable at spawn. Green has more breathing room away from the central area. The brown areas mark the mountain tops (the caves on the mountains).

Ice Islands: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?9s56gixg9tp53rt

Another icy and snow theme map with very steep terrain, chokepoints, and mountain passes. Here is one of the natural connections between the green spawn and the middle "island":

http://i.imgur.com/WbA2T.png

To get to the middle island, you need to cross one of two natural bridges and go up the steep slopes or build a bridge (set water damage on for maximum effect). The middle island has extremely rugged terrain but two accessible mountain passes:

The natural bridges connect the passes with each spawn, and it is possible to get to the passes without jumping (look for the natural staircases at each bridge). Inside an icy depression looking out over the blue spawn:

The light blue areas on the overview below are icy depressions. There are no caverns.

Pyramids: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?i8yqnzwt7pdjjgy

This is a flat, narrow map with pyramids in the middle. A 4-high wall protects each spawn. View from the blue spawn of the first set of small pyramids:

View of the main central pyramid:

Overview:

The brighter areas are the pyramids. People like to make forts at the top of the pyramids or tunnel through the pyramids. They are a little too big to grief. Enable water damage to prevent water snipers.

Cow Towers: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?qr5zwd9s9e4fu3f

I wanted to make something like Hallway, but it turned out quite strange:

http://i.imgur.com/bsqJk.png

Basically, there are a series of connected towers from spawn to spawn in the center of the map with low areas around it. The center area is bordered by massive block towers on either side. The tops of the towers had a camouflage pattern, but the coloring wasn't quite right, so the map has a cow skin pattern to it. I was amused enough to leave it. Here's the view from the bottom:

http://i.imgur.com/5PfXQ.png

There are stairs at the spawns to go up to the top of the center towers and to the flanking blocks (marked in red). Overview:

http://i.imgur.com/XLF1t.png

People like to grief the center towers and make sniper nests on the sides. The middle towers are not safe places to walk since people on the sides can shoot you easily.

Edit: I'll be hosting a rotation of these maps here: aos://2177482595 . It is on a fast rotation (4 caps/45 minutes), and it includes Siberian Summer.
