[MAP] Oasis

Postby Influx » Mon Jun 18, 2012 8:01 pm

Welcome to Oasis. Surprisingly not based off a famous band from Manchester, it features a small desert town, some fertile land with growing vegetation, desert wilderness and the titular oasis.

Download Oasis v1.0

This map has been sitting half-done for many months, and only in the last few days have I actually made a lot of progress with prop creation and placement. I think the first release is ready to go off into the wild to get savaged by griefers. But first, pictures;

I'm not entirely happy using just rocks to fill in the desert area, but nothing else I tried looked okay. If anyone has any suggestions for other things to put in it, or in the map in general, let me know!

This map was meant to be set near the Sahara in Northern Africa but it looks more Arabic in some places. It can be wherever you want it to be.

Wow, thanks for hosting so quickly! I'm going to try and get in and see how it plays since I can't playtest maps with my rubbish internet connection.

Very nice map! If you want to put anything in the desert how about an ancient temple, half buried beneath the sand. That would be pretty cool, and could go in the northern expanse of the desert.

Thanks! The only problem with your suggestion is that I wanted to avoid desert clichés in this map. That's why there are no pyramids or Sphynx sculptures to be found.

I might add it in if I feel that another building is required, though.

Maybe split it into two villages, with one to the south and another one to the north?
btw, looks like a nice map, maybe later I will try to find a server hosting it.

We are here because the Universe offers conditions so life can evolve,to the point where(at least one)species,in a small planet around a star lost between millions of galaxies,is able to ask itself:What was my origin? (M. Gleiser)

What about a Libyan or Moroccan style fort to the north, being in the center it will work for both teams

But I wanted the action to be concentrated around the middle. Besides, splitting it into two villages would require a lot more work than you may think - I'd need to smooth out some of the sand dunes, resurface the old village terrain back to dunes and move the buildings. I can't see the benefits outweighing the effort required unfortunately.

I think a fort would feel a little out of place - in reality a fort would require a much larger village to sustain it and I always have realities such as that reflect in my maps (a little OCD, some might say). Something I could use would be a bedouin camp, but how it could work and how it could change the gameplay needs some consideration first.

Thanks, I hope it plays well - I've not had a chance to play it really.

Or you could always bump me about it such a thing is a matter of a few minutes in Qubicle.
