What things do you like/dislike mostly about maps you play?

Postby DynomicPierre » Sat Jul 07, 2012 4:17 pm

I'm thinking about making a large scale map, with many details and something that can make everyone happy. I'm here to ask as the title suggests, to see what most want and hate most in maps in this game.

Please, in your inquiry, be specific so I know exactly what you're referring to.

Maps that have a large amount of blocks in the bottom layers that allow for people to just tunnel between points like animals, preferable the only dig-able areas would be hills and other terrain features. Otherwise it turns into an underground battle and that makes it a bit boring. (Exception being maps which are supposed to encourage this like Hallway, in which case it serves as the main tactic)

Too much water.

Some water is fine, but when you'll frequently find players either using it to avoid any potential combat, camp, or you have to cross a large body of water to even reach the other team and/or their intel you're greatly reducing - if not outright eliminating - the chance of fun shootouts occurring.

That GH2 map[2], pinpoint[1/2], and something whose name I didn't catch that was essentially two moderately urban spawns with a single long, low, and thin bridge through this mountain/island combo connecting them and the entire rest of the map water would be the maps I'm referring to.

Speaking of bridges, the absolute worst thing you can do is make your map reliant on a bridge - or bridges - for travel. The griefer magnets almost never survive more than five minutes into a round because apparently nothing gives the idiotic buggers a bigger hardon than rendering the map unplayable.

I like maps like pinpoint when you are in a city. Even though people snipe a lot the buildings blow up and make it interesting. Urban combat rules

I don't like maps which force every into one point of the map. Those kind of maps get boring because everyone is just stuck in the middle of the map trying to get kills but nobody is really getting anywhere.

Geerafiers and no teamwork. When Hompy changed the map to classic gen, everybody built together. On other maps, they just walk and shoot.

I love urban warfare maps

Don't have it on an island connected by bridge

Pure, downtown war.

Maps like Pinpoint; they don't have enough cover, and it takes too long and is to hard in general when under fire to build it yourself. Urban warfare is definitely the way to go, especially with the blast-ruined buildings, but don't overdo the urban side. Leave room building expansion and a little forest warfare. For example, Normandy. Just please, keep it Modernized. WWII is cool, really it is, but it's getting kind of boring and predictable.

The most important thing is to plan it out. You can't just throw a couple of roads together, add a few models, and call it a map. You need to think about how players will play it, how they can use strategy, and where the most popular points of the map will be. Don't leave a huge empty spot in the top of the map, or else nobody will go up there, making the middle too concentrated and the action too crazy. You need to make it balanced so that everyone will enjoy playing.

I like classicgen maps a lot, you can build, snipe, dig, rush, whatever. They're flexible to whatever mood I might be in. I also like aesthetically pleasing and fun maps, like Harbor2. I like to have plenty of room to build bunkers and such and places that can act as chokepoints when held onto correctly (like the large ship by Green spawn on Island. Whichever side can hold this point controls the game, and that makes it my favorite map.) I don't like large maps where the play is repetitive, just run and gun until you die, then repeat. When I'm playing Infiltration, the stronghold has to be hard to grief, has to have places where you can funnel the enemy through and pick them off, and you can't spawntrap the defenders easily.
