Well, it costs money to purchase a computer and internet connection.

Or, if you don't wish to give your finest computer up to server use you could spend X/month on a server hosted by a company like jestservers. I believe it's around seventy-five to one fifty USD a month for a 32 slot AoS server from jest.

No. Like IrishElf said, you only need a computer and internet, which I believe you already have if you can reach the forums. Though, server performance will depend on the speed of your internet.

Yeah, and try not to use a computer that's hosting a server for anything, tends to slow the server to an unplayable level.

$0.75 per slot a month, minimum of 18 slots. An Ace of Spades server with the standard capacity of 32 playes will be $24 monthly. Whether or not that is expensive, depends on your wallet.

at that kind of cost level a clan/group of players can rent its own server for less than the cost oof a beer or liter of petrol a head.

The cost is mostly from the bandwidth, a full 32 player server uses 1TB of premium bandwidth(why most of the servers are near the top in regards to location) at least per month. It's almost sold at cost. Transaction and conversion costs soak a bit up too. Resource usage on a busy server can be considerable, a single AoS server can use a full core at 3.2 Ghz, with RAM usage climbing as high as 2500MB. This is before mods/scripts. Europe has some pretty cheap VPS setups available, however I believe the performance variance would be noticeable when the action heats up.
