The Advanced Defense Trench

Postby Benton » Fri Jul 06, 2012 6:50 am

umadbro made a good tutorial/thread on why trenches are better then walls. So I decided to go further and record a video of a trench design of mine. The Advanced Defense Trench.

too deep. trenches should only be 2 deep max. that way people can hop in and out, and ducking provides the cover

That a tunnel not a trench, if you want to see an advanced trench system, check out my map Trenches.

Just because it's deeper doesn't mean grenades won't kill anyone. The only way to prevent grenades to some degree is to add a roof.

The design in the video has one big flaw: There's only two spots where heads will pop out of. Even with squad usage, which is pretty cheap in itself, such a position can be rather easily suppressed until the squad members acting as spawn points can be disposed of. A better alternative would have both of the shooty holes connected to each other with a trench that allows shooting over the edge, basically forming a two block high wall again, with a deeper part for faster traveling between the sides. Having only a single block wide "stair" to take shots from will complicate strafing against an opponent positioned diagonally from the trench, though, so you might want to accommodate for that.

The other, more often disregarded flaw of trenches is that the occupant is much more vulnerable to a jumpshot due to his lower position. You don't have to be very close to get the angle in, especially if there are elevated features in the terrain.

I think the best way to do it is to build a one block high wall and then dig down one block behind it, and volia, a trench with not such a low position, but then again, i am wrong about many things :)

If you look at the video there is a roof.

One thing I forgot to add in the video is that connecting more holes together to make a trench is probably a better idea. The design of my trench is made so that if someone tosses a grenade into one of the holes there is no way it will kill someone in the tunnel. Adding more holes to peek out of means you could have a whole trench/tunnel system defending the intel in an entire 180 degree radius around the intel, which would work well with gen maps. With the amount of random holes in gen maps, no attacker is going to drop down into one of them, unless they are going to try to take out the tunnel. Honestly, I don't like any cover that is underground because once the enemy see's you there, you can't jump out without getting shot, and they can just flank you. This tunnel system stops that. All that I am really showcasing in this video is a covered tunnel and a design that makes tossing grenades down the holes ineffective to killing the people in the tunnel. This design is made to be extended to make en entire tunnel system.

And by all means, so many modification could be made to this, for instance 25 blocks back you could have a large hole with a tunnel right to this trench, so people could access the trench without coming in contact with any hostile's.

It's a tunnel at best.

Ideally, you'll find a flat open area, dig down two blocks, and add a line at the level of your head so you can stand without getting shot. You've probably seen this on maps like Island, where airstrikes leave foxholes which players cover up with blocks. It works better than a conventional trench, actually, because you can still shoot back without having to exit the trench.

You're actually better off with the design I described, which is essentially a very low profile bunker. Making a trench only 2 blocks deep means you can be shot at by anyone who is 1 block higher than the top of the trench. It's actually worse than being out in the open, because when you're in the trench you move much more predictably, and you're therefore an easier target.

One of the best defenses against grenades is a slit trench (IE one block wide) on the top of a narrow hill. This decreases the chance the grenade will land in the trench at all, while putting it on the top of a hill means the enemy will (hopefully) not be able to aim the grenade well enough to land it in the slit trench.
