Ace Of Spades; Is It Really Worth Buying?

Postby Frostified » Thu Jun 28, 2012 6:10 pm

I know there is already a dissucsion thread, but this is different.

Ace of spades, in it's current state; is it worth buying?
(My opinion)

I really hope Ben and Mat are joking a little when they're saying that the Ace Of Spades OpenGL client will be paid for because when you take a look at the way this game is (even with the incoming additions e.g the helicopter) this game looks like nothing near commercial value.
1.0 versions are meant to be the finished (or very closely near finished) version of the game. The weapons (or whatever other context) are all tweaked to be fair and fun, They have the problem that is affecting the playerbase (e.g griefing/hacking/lack-of-teamwork) mostly under control and generally the game is fun to play for more that half an hour.
And at this rate, I REALLY don't see any of the above happening in Ace Of Spades.
Seriously, take a look at what we have now: Broken Weapons, Angry Players, Hackers and Griefers by the bucket-full, Broken Teamwork and Gameplay that mostly fails to grab players interest for more than 30 mins (IMO).
To explore these 'faults' further, I'll explain them a little more:
Weapons
Rifle keeps getting messed around with, imo it's the only weapon AoS has ever had that was PERFECT at one stage in it's developments.
SMG is an annoying weapon, I may be exaggerating about it, but it is regarded as a weapon that is overpowered. It has never been balanced/tweaked so that it is a stable weapon.
Shotgun is just a mess right now, it has utter random damage. I advise you hunt for BoF's thread that showed a detailed image of how the 0.75 shotgun works. To the lucky ones, the shotgun is a great weapon. To the average player, the shotgun is completely useless.
Finally, let me cover something that I, and many others have been raging about for a long time; the Spade. Oh dear god, what happend to the spades damage. Why on earth would you nerf it so that as a weapon it is redundant, rendering melee almost useless in a fight. Who on earth would've complained about the spade being too powerful? And why on earth did you listen to that one person who complained about it ben, when 100s of people have been asking for the rifle to be transformed back into it's former glory?
Angry Players And Teamwork AND Hackers/Griefers (two in one)
After reading the above text, this is pretty self-explanitory in most terms: Players are annoyed about the weapons.
We're also pretty miffed how there has been NO development whatsoever in getter players to experiment and try some more teamwork, Heck, ben has actually reduced the amount of teamwork by removing the intel cap bouns!
To top it all off, we STILL haven't found a fullproof way of keeping hackers and griefers at bay. But at least we may get registration soon to stop hackers and griefers.

Finally, I end this with a question aimed at Ben, Mat and the community: Is this game really worth paying for?

Don't forget the lag caused by the network code is unforgiveable. I tested my internet connection today, 16 Mbps and 30 ms of ping to Optimum Online in New York City and I get 250+ ms ping in-game. It's utterly inexcusable and has rendered the game completely unenjoyable for me and a lot of other people.

@ Frostfied, I agree with you 100%, good post.

And to answer your last question, no. It's not even worth my time to play/mod it these days, let alone pay for it.

Sad thing is, I would've payed up to about the .58 update. I would have even payed for .21 when I was in college with nearly zero funds. But not this.

I agree, the earlier versions were way more fun. I think the shotgun just ruined everything, trying to implement two weapons that fulfill the same purpose is just a bad idea. it'd probably be easier to implement a sniper rifle than the shotgun, honestly(not saying that's a good idea, but it would have worked way better than this)

I would have payed for the game at any point. It is a fun game and I enjoy it. Only issues IMO are the lag and SMG/Shotgun.

Can we stop posting these threads everywhere? By now we have already heard what 90% of the forums thinks about the game in various threads.

I'd pay for it all day erryday.
To a Physicist, white and black is the presence and absence of color.
To a Fine Artist, white and black are just shades and tints of color.
To a Painter, any paint that you could get into a can is a color.
THIS color, on the other hand, is #b4d455.

You see, thats what you newer guys dont get.

Now you all are used to the same things that have been in the game since .60, or whenever you joined. When you've been playing since .26 and have seen the changes, you'd feel differently. I'd pay erry day had I been in the same situation.

Also, the reason why I feel the game might not be worth my purchase is because of the consistency this game has had with updates.

Each update has something the players totally disagree with and hate (e.g. Removed radar, Rifle accuracy, Neon colors, Smg Overbuff, etc).

Each update has more bugs (e.g. Everlasting reload bug, ghost bug, jamming bug, etc)

The sad thing is these problems aren't looked at or fixed right away. Little updates that ruined the gameplay were something that took months to make and months to fix! For the longest time we didn't even think there would be a .70 update.

Now, with what I've seen, I think the next few updates will be a little nice, though, at the same time, I dont feel the community is being asked about everything. I just hope for the best.

Please excuse me for comparing this to Mojang and how they develop Minecraft, but I am for this once. Now the Mojang crew releases updated after updates. There are always little testing going on for new things. Players can experience everything beforehand. Not to mention, they listen to us, the community! I remember when they did something to the ladders. It ruined people's maps, worlds, etc. Next update, that game within a few weeks, removed that.

Zeke, I totally agree with you. I might not be long on forum, but I am playing game since 0.5 version. I would like for game to be like this, BUT without so overpowered smg, ghost lag, reload lag, hosting problems (pyspades is doing job preety well though, but there are still many problems). After they make alot of major differences in their update people that play this game for a long time lose interest in playing this game and consider that it ruined the game. Personally, I would get really mad if I would buy game and then semi would start pancakes or something. Game has to stick to it's roots! Older players have to be able to recognise old Ace of Spades in newer updates.

I typed s-w-a-y-i-n-g but it was replaces with pancakes.
