On maps like goonassault, you obviously want to go with a two block high wall; it keeps people from having to dig through it, and it's easy to get over.

On most other maps though, it's usually a good idea to stick with 3, if for no other reason than to keep you from getting sniped if you accidentally stop holding the CTRL key.

Some one aught to make a goon assualt map. Exactly the same, only its 3 blocks deep.

trench warfare also works on the map thats one big island with a few boats.

Something like that is liable to get griefed if it's played in true goon-style (IE long time limits or no time limit), but it was done on Pinpoint2 with pretty good results.

Nah, like hour long matches. The battle field would be destroyed and need resetting often. I prefer quick games with map changes/resets myself.

Ah. I'm more traditional, I prefer maps with very long time limits or that reset when one team wins the game a certain number of times. With the way the community is now though, it's no fun.

A good tactic is to dig a one-block deep trench in front of the main one, as grenades tossed at you from, say, a location where the thrower isn't going to instantly get shot, will just end up bouncing into that trench and blowing up harmlessly. And then you can gun down his bright yellow wall and headshot him.

Also, suddenly, ANOTHER SMG GUY. All it takes is a moment of concentrated fire (even if the other guy isn't using an SMG) to take down a wall. Unless that wall is insanely thick, in which case you can just spam nades or dig under and spade the dueces inside to death.

Also, trenches aren't really suitable on most maps. They need somewhat flat terrain to be successful.

On top of a hill you can't see the enemy.
At the foot of a large your protection gained is nullified and you've sacrificed a great deal of mobility.

What about the middle of the hill? I've seen extensive trench systems on Izzy's Island which linked up sniper towers and bunkers. Blue team couldn't advance over open ground towards us or they'd instantly be cut down. Instead they had to dig trenches connecting with ours, that's where fighting got interesting. Everyone was crouched down and you couldn't see any enemies even if they were just round the corner!

I think this subject really relies on the map itself rather than just general effectiveness. Rather than trenching, I usually tunnel. When you tunnel, there isn't really much of a way to get hurt unless you're really bad at tunneling. Trenching is pretty good unless you're really intent on getting through to the enemies' base.

It's usually best to make a small tunnel network on the side of a cliff, but I do see the argument in favour of trenches.

+1, I suppose?

Well, it is quite easy to counter-act nade attacks, just add a roof, and voila =P
If the grenade is already inside, just cover it with as many blocks you can. Works most of the time.

If you add a roof it's not a trench, it's a tunnel.

Only if it is underground. When half-under and half-above ground, it turns into a bunker.

We are here because the Universe offers conditions so life can evolve,to the point where(at least one)species,in a small planet around a star lost between millions of galaxies,is able to ask itself:What was my origin? (M. Gleiser)

But we still arrive at the issue that it's no longer a trench, eh Chaos? :P

Trenches are great, but are a waste of time unless you've got friends hanging out in the trench with you. 2 Block deep foxholes are what I prefer when I'm alone, but Trenches are the best when you have more than 1 person, as foxholes get crowded really fast.

For my trenches I usually use the same design Influx mentioned except with only 1 walking space unless it is a busy pathway. I'll throw in a few underground shelters and dead ends to hide in in case of grenades/airstrikes.
