OpenGL, do we REALLY want it?

Got a great new idea for the game?

What do you think of OpenGL?

OpenGL looks like crap.

I noticed, in the video however. there is no particles. or shading. which is kind of bad in my opinion. but the players and guns look awesome.

what he said.

Holy crap that is very good!

I can't wait!

My only concern is people who play AoS cause of the low system requirements might not be able to play it anymore.

My computer runs openGL pretty well, unless shaders are involved.

Yup, this would be great, make sure Its req is OpenGL-1 and not 2. Because you could cut the average players playing by ½… Also in the current AoS, Make blocks past the fog invisible, and players past the fog invisible. It'd help bring up FPS. Correct me if this is already implemented.

Not yet.
The OPENGL version is an independant version of AoS , coding diffrently from the version we currently have.

I see a lot of people for and against it, but what about those of us in between? Opengl looks cool and crisp, but I still like the "fuzziness" of the current renderer. ARGGGGGH, I CAN'T DECIDE WHICH ONE I LIKE BETTER!
I just hope there will still be a option to use the old renderer. Not that big of a deal, but it would be nice.

Yes.
What OpenGL gives us (just a taste):
Cross compatibility! (MacOSX and Linux)
More options for the future. (VoxLap isn't that feature filled)

As for the things you said. Remember it is still being tested so there will be glitches, also framerate and memory issues? Where did you get that from!?! Look at it this way, your moving from a engine written when Windows 2K was a "modern" OS to a engine being written as I type. Nearly all old computers have a (crappy) GPU of some sort, this will run basic OpenGL cubes much, much faster than VoxLap. As for memory an extra couple of Megabytes but nothing noticeable, definitely no memory leaks that would actually effect performance.

One great thing is the amount of possibilities OpenGL brings! VoxLap is nice but very basic compared to OpenGL, not because OpenGL has huge amounts of features- rather it is low level. While with VoxLap lots is done for you (and can't be changed) with OpenGL this isn't the case and everything can be done how you want!

Please be better informed next time you post.
And I'm sure the "fuzziness" can be added into the new OpenGL option!

Like DoomSplitter said it would be the best solution (in my opinion) to let the players decide between the voxel and the OpenGL version.

You have a lot of nerve to be telling me to be better informed. I know about all the positives of OpenGl, I was just stating my opinion about how it looked.

OpenGL will allow for more modding capabilities,
like Quake killstreak sounds (excluding HEADSHOT)
Admins spawning statues with their name on it
A cool background tune/ server playlist
Also it looks smooth blocky, like when minecraft got smooth lighting its graphics were comparable to Crysis 2.
