In game music?

Postby Defaulter » Wed Mar 21, 2012 10:41 pm

Hey,

I was toying with the idea of hving in-game music, in the background.

Volume would be changeable in the config file, from 0-10. And then in-game it would be turned on/off with a key, And track changed with a key.

It wouldn't even be hard to get the music, GreasMonkey makes some seriously awsume tracks, that would fit really well in computer games. Also TGM plays guitar very well, and StackOverflow is in a band.

So what do you think?

If it's configurable, then I don't see why not

That would be cool. And maybe some kind of media player integration as well, so people could play their own music in-game.

Also I'd be willing to donate some of my music.

EDIT: I realise this looks out of place, sorry. I'm talking about libraries which could be used if this were to go ahead - module music tends to be a lot smaller than .wav/.ogg/whatever. I am for this notion.

Well, libdumb is pretty lightweight IIRC, and it's the open source module player that doesn't suck. The closed source module player that usually sucks less is libbassmod.

The two open source module players that completely suck ass are libmikmod (as used in SDL_mixer) and libmodplug. Don't use any of these.

I don't know if there's an .xrns player, but I fear that someone will have to attach VSTs and crap like that, and some of those would be non-free, and by non-free I'm also talking about cost, so mat^2 would be limited... he might as well try converting to the (REAL, as opposed to that modplug-extended VST bastardisation) .it format.

Sounds promising, Music can really set the mood of a game, I remember in Dawn of War there was a mission to attack a chapel and the soundtrack had an eerie Gregorian Chant that played just subtly in the back-ground, really gave you a shiver when you caught it.

If the default music is bad, it reflects poorly on the game, even if you can put your own music in it.

Anyways do you even notice the music after like, 5 minutes of playing?

I would hate to hear it loop.

It's the most annoying feeling when hearing background music.
To a Physicist, white and black is the presence and absence of color.
To a Fine Artist, white and black are just shades and tints of color.
To a Painter, any paint that you could get into a can is a color.
THIS color, on the other hand, is #b4d455.

I will say.. Yes. If it configureable.
Becuz if you're going to play AoS seriously, the sounds are Rly help for spotting enemies and such.

IMO it would kind of take away from the mood of the game. I always thought the silence was cool. As flutter said, even if its removable, the default will always reflect what the game is.

This. Music is just a distraction in FPSs.

Well if music is put in to future versions I feel like it should have a somewhat action feel to it and a little comedic touch to it to lighten the mood but not so much that it ruins the game.
