I have, on past occasions, tried to make a map using the Voxel Editor. I couldn't. Not that I couldn't make it work, but because everything is so obtuse. I think that's mostly why a lot more people stick with making scopes and weapons and not maps.

However, I have a simple suggestion that would probably make the map editor 80% more user friendly. And that suggestion is this: Make the controls more intuitive. I'm not a programmer, but changing what button does what would hardly be "a major overhaul". Something like this:

A, S, W, D - Move (instead of the arrow keys)
Mouse 1 - Place a single block (instead of insert)
Mouse 2 - Remove a single block (instead of delete)

And when you're in paint mode, mouse 1 becomes paint the selected block.

Simple. And everything else can pretty much remain the same. But let's face it, when you have to move your mouse to the right area, hit insert, move the mouse to where you want the next block to go and then hit insert again ... it's just frustrating. And having the place/remove block buttons on the mouse would probably increase map production time.

What do you guys think?

I like it,but I think VOXED is not Ben's software,it is Ken Silverman's software...

I know, but I'm not sure if Mr. Silverman worked with Ben on this software of how it works. So I figured I would post this here, since it does relate to the community. And maybe one of the admins or mods would know how to contact Silverman, and the process would work like that. :-P

Also, this thread might help make it happen. If he's contacted about this and sees a lot of positive reactions to this idea, Ken may be more inclined to take up the suggestion than if one person just emailed him.

Eh, a better map editor'd be great but with .75's click/drag building and pyspade's godmode giving unlimited blocks [at least last time I used it.] private servers might wind up filling that role before one can even get moving.

We need a map editor,that is user-friendly. Something like '' farcry 2/Crysis/company of heroes''
map editor.

something like a sandbox. I prefer to build a map, block by block, then using something like voxel/hammer editor.its all to hard to understand.

Example

You start a map like in minecraft and shape it to your wishes, It might take time to create something good for a MP.
But it gives a nice creative feel to AOS.The Editor needs to be offline/and online.So your friends can help build.

When you start a new level. You can build objects and safe it, so you can duplicate it and that kind of options.And the game needs a main menu ect.


Main menu.

Play online,server browser.
Map editor,offline,online.
options,settings,ingame,sounds,
credits

In the left corner you need the version of AOS.




Hope it's kinda readable.

I completely agree with OP, this just makes so much more sense and mapping would become hella easier. You wouldn't even necessarily need any other 3rd party programs like bitmap converter.

Also maybe choosing the brush size with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9? This way you could more accurately edit the shape of the terrain to your wishes.

Well the developer needs to make the, editor user-friendly asap, it will bring more players to AOS.And i will spend months building maps.

I'll shoot some support for this suggestion.

I mean, heck. I'm playing this on a laptop, which doesn't even have those buttons visible anywhere.
That means I have to hold "Fn" and press enter to place on block. You know, there's no way I'm going to do that with one hand, since they're near in the very opposite sides of the keyboard. Delete goes for the Fn + Backspace, too.

Mapping could get a lot better, and I could finally build up some good maps among the others. I sickn' tired of hallway and bridge maps and so on, and gen maps are quite rare all over the time.
Goon haven 3 has okay maps, though.
