[TUTORIAL] IRC

Postby CraftDinur » Fri Jan 13, 2012 2:54 am

I decided to post a tutorial on the basics of the IRC as many people I've encountered are wondering how to use it.

The IRC

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat and is basically a way people communicate with one another either in game within the
server or in an IRC chatroom. A symbol is prefixed on their name to indicate the user's status in the IRC.

+ = voiced user
@ = administrator
no prefix = non-voiced user

If the IRC has a setting that does not allow non-voiced users to be broadcasted, you must wait for either an administrator
to voice you or the bot to automatically voice you in order to speak to other IRC users.
The administrator can also ban or un-voice you if he/she chooses to do so based on rude behavior or other similar offences.
If there is an IRC plugin in a server, IRC users' text will be broadcasted through the server in blue. They are able to see all the text that is occuring in game.

Basic Stuff

When using the IRC there are 3 basic things to note.

The Channel is the chatroom where you would like to talk to other IRC users. It is signified with a "#" followed by the
channel name. For example, the Ace of Spades IRC channel is #AOS.

The Server is the server the IRC is being hosted on. If you have the correct channel but incorrect server, you will not be
linked to the correct IRC chatroom and you will be left alone in an chatroom. The Ace of Spades IRC server is irc.quakenet.org while the Goon Haven IRC is irc.tribalwar.com.

Your Nickname is the name in which you are known by in the IRC. When you enter the IRC, everyone will see your name as you have set it by. Usually set your name to your IGN so people will know who you are.

Client

Some IRC servers require a Client to access. The Quakenet IRC does not require a client to access and can be found at this link http://webchat.quakenet.org/ A commonly used IRC client is mIRC. mIRC is a free IRC client. It prompts you to register after a 30 day trial but you can continue to use the client after the 30 days however the startup time will be slower as you will have to navigate through a few more popups.

Commonly Used IRC Commands

Commands in the IRC are noted by having a "/" in front of the command.

/join (CHANNEL) - joins channel
/nick (NAME) - changes current nickname to the nickname provided
/quit - disconnects you from the channel

Joining the Goon Haven IRC

Many Goon Haven players wonder where the mysterious blue text is coming from. It's coming from users in the #GH-AOS IRC. #GH-AOS is not hosted by Quakenet like most servers but instead by Tribalwar. The setup to get into the IRC is a bit different.

1. Download mIRC
2. Go to http://goonhaven.org/forums/
3. Click on #goonhaven
4. When in #goonhaven, type /join #GH-AOS(nothing, 2, or 3)

In #GH-AOS you will have to wait until an admin decides to voice you before you are able to speak with the players in game. #GH-AOS has been recently getting flooded by new people just learning to use the IRC and it has been irritating a few of the original IRC dwellers. Please don't join if your only intention is to troll people using the blue text or some other malicious intent. Please also don't ask to become admin in the channel. It won't happen.
