Starbound!!

Postby Knox » Wed Jun 20, 2012 11:48 am

Maybe if you've played Terraria, you've heard of this fantastic upcoming game!

Starbound is an awesome indie "2D sandbox RPG".
But I'll not explain too much here, just read the quotes and click the links to find out more cool stuff! :)

Starbound begins with you fleeing your homeworld in a space shuttle, just as it’s destroyed by an unknown enemy. With nothing to guide it, the escape pod shoots into space without direction, becoming hopelessly lost in a sea of stars.

As luck would have it, the space shuttle makes contact with an abandoned space station and an adventure begins that will take you hurtling across the universe.

Starbound contains both quests and story driven missions, buried inside its vast sandbox universe.

...Planets in Starbound are entirely procedurally generated and filled to the brim with unique content.

We went into the planet generation with one simple goal: no two planets should be the same.

By procedurally generating even the smallest details, we’re doing just that.
Not only is the terrain of the planet procedurally generated, but the weather, the gravity, the difficulty level, the plant life, the behaviour and appearance of alien creatures, and much more all contain random or procedurally generated elements.

We want you to feel like an explorer!

Exploring is wonderful, but everyone needs a place to call their own. That’s why we’re letting you claim an entire planet!

When you claim a planet as your new homeworld, a whole new aspect of gameplay opens up.

Everything that makes a planet unique is at your command. Feel like changing the weather? Build a weather centre! Don’t like the terrain? Terraform it!

Every aspect of the planet is under your control. Once you’re happy with it, start populating it with characters you’ve met in your travels and take care of them!
They’ll have needs and desires and won’t hesitate to ask for your help if they require assistance.

This is only just scratching the surface of what we have in store for you in Starbound.

I think the release date is somewhere in September, but I'm not sure.

What do you think of the game? I think it's simply hilarious. And the graphics... Just awesome!!

In the meantime, check out their website for more info!

Also, there is a very nice community out there, so be sure to register on the forums and get to know the people!

There is also a live chat!

Here are some articles about the game which include some pictures I didn't post and contain interesting info:

Yeah, this game is made by "Tiy", a guy who was originally the graphics artist for Terraria, but then quit to make his own game.

Looks quite awesome, however, it still reminds me of good ol' Terraria.

EDIT: Actually, I just found out (by reading your post) that the NPC's will actually interact with you, that's something that I always wanted in Terraria.

Sounds awesome!

To everyone commenting: Please don't say Starbound is like Terraria in space (it is NOT)!
It is like you say AoS is Minecraft with guns! >:D

BTW, my Starbound forum name is "Chili", so if you register there you can add me!

Unfortunately, that's what people are going to think about Starbound, since it's made by Terraria's graphics artist.

A lot of people are already calling Starbound the next generation of Terraria.

One funny thing is that a lot of people are not going to buy Starbound simply because they think that Re-Logic is making the game.

They think that Re-Logic (who isn't making Starbound) is going to abandon Starbound just like Terraria.

On topic, I like how you'll be able to give coordinates of your planet to other people so that they can explore your planet.

Reminds me of the seed system in Minecraft, and I really want to know how they'll include this in the game.

In Terraria, you had to share your world file via download sites (MediaFire, for example) which made things a lot harder.

This coordinates system is going to make everything about sharing worlds much easier.
