Indeed. Why did they pick ponies ? Why not, say cats or dogs or chimpanzees or anything can use its appendages for something other than running. Hooves are lame. Also, why are they sentient? They don't need it. It's not like they can make tools or anything.
But what is worse is that they appear to have lost the hard part of the hoof, making it nearly useless. My most reasonable explanation is aliens.
